That would be WDC land. It is the site of the Southwest Cunard Quay development which should break ground late 2019 or early 2020.

If it's the same stuff they have on the front of that build, it's just branded vapour seal or something, thankfully.

I see skylines of other cities and admire them so much... we have such a flat, tabletop one due to the viewplanes from Citadel Hill.... I hope the new buildings in the Cogswell District can make a change!

The majority of office towers are lower to the water as well, it's very noticeable when you drive into the city from Bayers Lake and only can see the top ~5 stories of the DT office buildings. Even with the lack of +100m towers downtown, the skyline is still very impressive all things considered. Here in Saskatoon the skyline is dominated too much by ~70m commie blocks with most of the office towers being stout ~50m-60m buildings. Other than the river landing project, most of the development is sprawl and the downtown is starting to hurt because of it. Halifax is in much better shape than we give credit for.

I do agree it is an impressive skyline, but I would love to see a bit more shape to it!

Since buildings can go taller between viewplanes, and they don't cover all of downtown, I wonder why more development doesn't pop up between?

Because many locals and Council members would scream "They're TOO TALL!!!". Remember the foolishness of the Twisted Sisters brouhaha?

In any event I believe the HRM by Design planning document pandered to those voices by imposing artificially low height limits on most of the DT regardless of viewplanes.

The most notable thing to me in is view is how much the city has filled in over the past couple of years. Just as there is neighbourhood critical mass there's a similar effect along a street. There's a big difference between a street that's half parking lots, one that has 1 or 2 gaps, and one that has 0 gaps. Halifax has a lot of 80% blocks that could be much better with a couple new buildings.

Lower Water Street is a good example of a stretch that was half parking lot and ~0 vibrancy. Barrington is an example of a couple of gaps. Spring Garden Road's main commercial stretch is an example of 0 gaps.

A nice demonstration of the tabletop effect, unfortunately.

Wouldn't I like to see something so different in the skyline, a signature building! ... I had great hopes for The Alexander and had it been another 10 or 20 stories, it would've been a lot nicer... It looks so stunted there below the Maritime Centre, even though it is 24 stories.

I've always thought Halifax had a great skyline, "tabletop" or not. Really seems to depend on what angle you view it from as to whether that effect is accentuated or not - just looking back through this thread is evidence of that.

Really depends on the angle, I think. For me, anyway. This particular shot makes everything look very flat. There are other shots where things look pretty good. Usually from a closer perspective where a slight upward angle accentuates the height slight height variations. From this far back and from this angle, it just looks like a flat mass of buildings to me.

Part of what makes a great skyline for me is the overall shape. Lots of cities (granted, usually bigger cities) have a signature 'shape'. Something you could render as a silhouette and it would be easily identifiable as X city. Signature tall buildings help, but aren't necessary as long as there's enough variation.
