Fairhamilton and I have taken up the gauntlet and will be planting bulbs and whatever native plants I can scrounge up in the LIUNA 'parkette' this Saturday, Sept. 27. Please join us! We'll be meeting at Reardon's at 10am.

If you can, bring trowels, or one of those little bulb planter thingies if you have one, bigger shovels for mixing in soil, mulch, and we have water issues so if you could bring along coolers/thermoses filled with water, and watering cans, that would be great too.

That's all I can think of for now. If you have any questions, pm Fairhamilton or me, or post it here.

Yup, we've now got well over 100 spring bulbs (closer to 200) that need to go into the ground this Saturday. I'll make sure we have lots of water, but if anyone has some watering cans we'll need those.

That little 'parkette' will be full of colour next spring.

I wonder if Bread and Roses or Reardons has a water hook-up they'd let us use?
Also, I was thinking that perhaps we could suggest to Bread and Roses that they hold their organic farmers market in this parkette and sidewalk while the weather is nice. They do a market in their cafe each Saturday from 10-3 or 9-4, something like that.
Perhaps they could use it for some outdoor art/music shows in conjunction with Pepperjack Cafe etc.....

Just a reminder to everyone about our guerrilla gardening meet-up in the LIUNA parkette tomorrow, meeting at 10am in front of Reardon's. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours, less depending on the number of people, so it shouldn't be a huge time committment. I'll be there rain or shine, most likely with a kid or two in tow, so don't be shy about bringing offspring. Anyone know what the weather's going to be like?

too bad, this seems like a great opportunity to put some faces to names and do something about that ridiculous parkette.

Highwater, Jon Dalton, my wife Deborah and I met this morning and planted around 200 bulbs, and a large grouping of perennials donated from Highwaters garden, on the property.

We had some people stop by and ask us what was going one, including Tyler from the BIA. Everyone who stopped was very positive in seeing things planted. Paul Reardon offered coffee and a free lunch!!

The soil was pretty rough, mostly clay and stone, so we'll have to see what grows. I can hardly wait until Spring 2009.

It was great meeting both Highwater and Jon Dalton.

So I had a look at the plants yesterday when I was down picking up my Turkey from Reardon's and they're doing even better than I expected (everything except the columbine which was on its last legs when I planted it, so no surprise there). Must be all the fertilizer from the folks taking dumps in the back corners. I was going to pick up the litter, but since most of it consisted of bits of paper covered in human excrement, I took a pass.

Talking to Paul next door, I was not surprised to hear that no one is taking reponsibility for the park. It's not a city park, since it's on LIUNA's property, but LIUNA obviously feels that their responsibility ended with plunking down some pressure treated benches, rose of sharon, and stella d'oro lilies.

A fresh crop of weeds is coming along nicely, but they can be dealt with in the spring. I'm happy to do my bit, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pick up other people's s**t.

On that note, enjoy your Thanksgiving!

I drove by there today, it looks really nice! King william is really becoming a nice street, and with a little work it could definitely be as nice (and subsequently) popular as Hess. I think the problem is that the area seems a little sketchy to people and they don't want to go there.

I think you'll find the majority of the "sketchy" people in Hamilton are polite and harmless.
