Are those brown portions of the VA hospital done in brick? I haven't been by the Tulane side. Of course, that might just be wet plywood before they put up Tyvek and the metal cladding.
It would have been amazing if they were.

Does anyone know what is going in 301 St Charles ave? They have started construction already. I have heard rumors that the top floor will be condo's and the bottom will be retail, specifically a 5 guys burgers. Can anyone confirm this?

That building was supposed to house Renaissance RX's headquarters, but things aren't looking so hot for them as of late:

Either way, it wouldn't surprise me if a portion of the ground floor became a Five Guys.

I really hope Renaissance RX will be successful in the long run.

Also, Copa Airlines started flying to Panama City, Panama today. Looks like long lines at the airport for the flight this morning. Great to have more international options.

High-End Bayou St. John Development...

Sidney Torres plans high-end Bayou St. John development

An investor group led by New Orleans businessman Sidney Torres has plans for a high-end housing and retail development along a prime stretch of the Lafitte Greenway in Mid-City. IV Capital, a venture capital firm led by Torres, said Friday (June 26) it has bought a nine-acre plot of land bounded by the Mid-City Rouses supermarket and Bayou St. John, between Conti and Toulouse streets...

Interesting, Joe Jaeger is also a partner on this. Dude is like a bad penny.

I'm skeptical this can actually come to pass. Seems like another big fanciful plan without much chance. Also, good luck getting anything substantial approved by the neighborhood groups. They will bitch and moan until A) the developer gives up, or B) the developer dumbs it down to something you could find in Kenner.

If Jaeger and Torres are involved I wouldnt bet against it and also wasnt this where the large sports complex was just proposed?

Description
The project proposes to tear down the outdated ranch style houses located at 2400 St Charles avenue and 2416 St. Charles Avenue. In their place, we’d like to construct a traditional brick and cast stone, four-story, 24,400 square foot, multi-family building. The building will house (11) residential units each approx. 2,000 sf in size. Each unit will be assigned (2) parking spaces, located on the ground floor in the rear of the building. As indicated in the elevations, the front façade will be approximately 58 ft. in height, and step down in the back to approximately 47 ft. in height. We are requesting a conditional use in height as outlined in the Current Zoning Ordinance for RM-2A zoning for structures fronting a major street.

Description
Renovation of a 2 ½ story masonry townhouse and detached rear service building. The townhouse is to be renovated into two single-story apartment units above a commercial space, with a 2-story guest house and garden in the rear. The proposed rehabilitation includes: 1) reconstruction of the O'Keefe side wall (see attached structural report); 2) first floor height increase (current ceiling height is atypically low for a 19th century commercial space); 3) street facades at Julia and O'Keefe per attached elevations (historic records are missing and exterior of building significantly altered; exploratory demolition provided incomplete guidance for rehabilitation).

The sports complex proposed for that site had no money behind it. And I think MCNO will be in favor of this. I live a few blocks away and I'm excited about it.

That proposal at O'Keefe and Julia looks awesome. Very creative blend of old and new.

With my developer hat on, though, it looks very expensive to build. Two elevators, lots of exterior walls, gotta preserve the facade on O'Keefe while building behind, etc. I wonder how much the units will go for?

Ok thanks just curious. They have a plan on curbed but its the plan from the previous rock climbing deal. So was just wondering if I missed something. This combined with the redevelopment of the Home Depot will completely change that area.

I make them up!

They are spread out across the cities website. You mainly just need to know how look through all the crap. You wouldn't believe how many electric permits there are in a day.

Noticed the city changed the deadline for Piazza Di italia proposals from June 30th to July 31st. Makes sense because the original timeframe seemed just a tad short for a RFI with no real direction.

City Issues Stop Work Order on New Jail for Violating City Code, Failing to House All Populations

City Attorney Also Files Lawsuit Requiring the Sheriff to Comply with the Law, Court Orders

NEW ORLEANS – Today, the City of New Orleans’ Department of Safety & Permits issued a stop work order on all construction of the new Orleans Parish jail due to flagrant violations of City Code and failing to build a jail that can house all populations, including those with medical and mental health needs – a key requirement in the permits approved by the City Council. Additionally, the City Attorney’s Office today filed a writ of mandamus in Civil District Court ordering Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman to fulfill his ministerial duty to adhere to the local ordinance that requires the new facility to house all inmates (individuals with acute mental health needs are excluded from this requirement).

“The new jail facility being constructed is in plain violation of the law, including the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance and the conditional use permit approved by the City Planning Commission and the City Council,” said Jared Munster, director of the New Orleans Department of Safety & Permits. “When construction of the jail was debated and decided back in 2010 and 2011, the Sheriff was required to build a prison that addresses the needs of all populations as conditions for approval, including those with medical and mental health needs; the current jail facility is not equipped to do that. Therefore, the City of New Orleans is ordering the Sheriff to halt all construction on the project until the City can verify that the Sheriff has properly addressed these vulnerable populations in the new jail facility.”

The new Phase II jail facility required Conditional Use approval through the City Planning Commission and City Council prior to permitting. Therefore, the technical citation for issuance of the Stop Work Order is that the project stands in violation of the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance (Ordinance 4,264 MCS, as amended) and Ordinance 24,828 MCS, which authorized this specific conditional use in 2011.

The federal courts and the consent decree monitor have both recognized that the new Phase II facility has not been properly constructed to adequately house inmates with medical and mental health conditions, female and juvenile inmates, disabled inmates, or inmates requiring disciplinary and/or administrative segregation. Therefore, the City Attorney’s Office has also filed a writ of mandamus lawsuit asking the Civil District Court to require the Sheriff to get the new jail into compliance as soon as possible.
