Redwood City is a suburb located on the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. Redwood City is the county seat of San Mateo County. As of the 2005 census, the city had a total population of 76,000. The Port of Redwood City is the only deepwater port on San Francisco Bay south of San Francisco. Redwood City's main street is known as Broadway, although it also has an actual Main Street, which Broadway intersects. On Broadway, at the western and eastern entrances to the city's downtown, there are arches over the roadway emblazoned with the city's name and the slogan, "Climate Best by Government Test." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redwood_City%2C_CA
The following photos encompass the various buildings in downtown Redwood City.
^Old Courthouse of San Mateo Country built in 1910.
^Caltrain commuter rail station by downtown
^Clock tower at a major thoroughfare that serves the SF Peninsula.

^Old Courthouse and newly constructed square.
^City Hall
^Old firehouse which serves as the city's main library.

That's all.

Thanks for the comments everyone. There is certainly pedestrian life, but it's not as lively as the surrounding cities. In my opinion, a city south of Redwood City named Palo Alto by Stanford, which is where I live has the pedestrian life while Redwood City has the architecture. At least more impressive architecture.

Isn't there a big push to redevelopment many sites in Downtown in an attempt to make it the central core of the Peninsula. I remember reading of a huge development somewhere in the approvals process near the Caltrain station. Definitly would like to see that happen, it would be another great stop along the train line, maybe the best. Great photo thread, we dont often see many of the downtowns and villages around San Francisco.
Thanks for the pictures. I drove by Redwood City on 101 a while back and saw that dome of the old courthouse and wondered what it was. It's great to see the full building. Lots of hidden gems in the Bay Area!

To my understanding Redwood City's downtown has gone through several redevelopment projects as of late. For example, the Century theater complex and the restoration of the old courthouse and the addition of the square in front of it. I do not know much more than that, but if Redwood City is trying to compete with neighboring cities as being the center of the Peninsula than that might be a little difficult in my opinion. Just south of Redwood City is the the residential area of Atherton and following that "city" is the pretty vibrant city of Menlo Park and lastly the very dense and vibrant city of Palo Alto. Although I would probably head to Redwood City to see movies though, so that would draw me to the city at least.

Great thread! Not sure how I missed this last summer. You captured so many of the many historic and very interesting buildings scattered around the area.

Know ye that San Mateo County "is among the 20 most affluent counties in the U.S., in term of personal, per capita and household income, strongly Democratic and ethnically diverse" (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Mat...ty,_California ) which makes it rather unusual, being both wealthy and liberal.
It's also the only San Francisco suburban county you don't have to cross a bridge to get to.
Anyway, once again I'm getting to see all this local real estate I would hardly see otherwise. Cruising down I-280 or 101 you don't see the downtowns--or much at all but traffic.

Yeah, that really is a shame. I keep trying to set aside a day when I'll do the whole trip up El Camino, but I always run behind and my friends tell me to hurry my ass.
Ahhh more peninsula pix, I do like these towns. Is the weather warmer here than SF the way San Jose is? Im guessing the mountains go along way to keeping the micro climate of this area warmer....
