That is true. But they did have $300 million and a human-scaled building stock to work with. Nothing like that really exists downtown except for the warehouse district which was supposed to be Jackson Street Entertainment District but after that concept's demise, the market isn't purposing those buildings for those kinds of venues. I really which JSED came to fruition, for what it's worth.

I'd suspect the reasons we have so few hotel rooms downtown are:

1. Not much 'going on' downtown historically - at least until the recent building boom
2. Tons of hotel rooms in all the various resorts outside of downtown (The Boulders, Troon, the Princess, etc)
3. Las Vegas is close enough that it draws a lot of business events that could otherwise be conducted here

Maybe if we wind up with more corporate HQs downtown - and a nice entertainment district builds up (which seems to be underway with the Roosevelt District) this will change.

A fairly comprehensive video covering downtown projects with several aerial shots of downtown construction sites. 14 cranes presently over downtown with 9 more in permitting!

I had no idea the homeless encampment West of Downtown was this bad or out of control. Although the video was taken by a guy (and his wife?) that are probably only partially correct that all of them are meth addicts, this really brings into light how bad homelessness is getting in Phoenix.

Yeah...I park off 8th St for work and I noticed a camp just set up on 9th St out of the blue recently. I was shocked- full tents and everything! Homeless has always been an issue west of 7th St but it seems to be getting worse.

In other areas I noticed a camp that was growing along the canal off Apache/ Main on the Tempe/ Mesa border but it was cleared up pretty quickly. I also saw one along Price Rd where the 101 and the 60 meet...but that was cleared as well as I think they were setting up along an SRP/ ADOT easement. Either way, I hope we don't go the way of CA...infact we can just rent a few FlixBus' and send them there.

Its been like that for well over 10 years.

I had to do some... Court ordered community service... when I was a teenager and it was like this even back then.

Yes, it's a problem, but I don't think poverty porn like this is a solution. The male voice keeps saying "This is terrible," but I'm not really sure what his motivations are in making this video. The female voice makes no pretense of compassion with comments like "nuts" and "crazy town."

Do you means avenues? It's always been the area southwest of downtown that seen this type of activity.

Yea, I don't really know what the intention of the individuals were that took the video. I just filled out a PHX C.A.R.E.S. report for that whole stretch and included screenshots from the video. Not sure how much this can help, but maybe they can go down and at least get a few people help that may want or need it.

They hang out there because A its abandoned and people leave them alone, and B its close to charities that give them food and shelter.

Not to mention its not even a large encampment compared to what you find in Salt Lake and Denver

Those are people not zoo animals. The author of that video is treating them like a spectacle.

While I agree that folks in unfortunate circumstances shouldn't be exploited, it's important to film because it shows people, as well as the politicians, how the situation is deteriorating. I think it makes an impact much like those IG pages Santamonicaproblems and streetpeopleoflosangeles.

No. To reiterate what is being said, I've seen much worse since the 80s here in Phoenix. That was a line of tents in a pretty empty area with social services nearby. The commentary should be "hmmm...I had no idea that people don't have homes, and some of them live in tents. I guess that I should question my ideas about the world." Going on about meth, etc. is just stupid.

There are places that look way, way, WAY worse than this, so let's stop getting hysterical.

I've been directly involved with these situations, including that area since the late 80's. The stories I could tell you guys...

Apparently my report to PHX C.A.R.E.S did something (or maybe someone else already reported it since this happened so fast): https://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/cr...wntown-phoenix

Only temporary for the city to clean up though. Hopefully, those wanting help can get it.

Even if people recongregate there, probably not a bad idea to periodically clear people out and clean up the trash that is bound to accumulate in an encampment like that.

Thats really all we can do, the state/city are not legally allowed to push these people into drug rehab or state mental care (which is what they need) unless its because of other serious crimes which simply loitering is not.

The only way to actually fix this is to bring back the old asylum system that we had in place decades ago but they had such a bad reputation the nation for the most part shut it down in the 80's and now people that used to go into state care languish in the streets.
