Final touch up on the pavement for the traffic shift lanes of Adelaide St now going in. The temporary rail crossing gates are also installed and being tested today. Expectation is the traffic shift of Adelaide could happen within days. Also caisson and piling machines are busy on the west side where the old gas bar and car wash was and the new pumping station will be built.

In fact, the city has posted on their social media that the switch to the diversion lanes happens tomorrow. I admire their optimism when they say in the FB post "The bypass road will keep traffic flowing while construction is underway." lol. Sure it will, maybe at 3am lol. Will be interesting to see as construction actually starts though. I don't intend to go that way during work very often unless I absolutely have to, but I'll try to take pics from my elevated perch every so often.

This looks way too fancy for a temporary road. Full concrete gutters and all?

Perhaps it will be a service road or something to the park or whatever after it's no longer needed? Seems like a waste to tear something up that looks so permanent.

It is going to be in service for a couple years, so I think it's justified for being done like it is. They aren't going to want the road draining into the pit as they are working in there so the gutters make sense to me. Depending on what happens to that old Copps property after this is all done, I could see that road incorporated into access, similar to Wellington and Horton where the road splits off before the underpass to join Bathurst.

They have now removed the old rail crossing towers and arms. Looks like the piling machines are sinking pilings between the north and south tracks on the old roadway. The north track is being removed which likely means the north side will be excavated first leaving the south track for train traffic during the first half of the project. Lots of steel pilings have been delivered to the site and are stored on the west side beside the U-storage place.

Here are some videos from the city (through the email newsletters I get) showing the new detour road and current state of construction.

Also from the email:

What’s ahead
The next major milestone for the project is installation of a temporary CP bridge in the track portion of the project. Completing this work will bring the project to the excavation phase, which will make way for a permanent structure. Excavation will begin later in November 2022, and will continue over the winter months.

Continuous operations and traffic impacts
Crews are busy preparing for the temporary bridge installation, which will require two periods of 36-hour continuous operations including night work:
Tuesday, October 25 and Thursday, November 2

Work planned for the coming weeks includes:
  • Preparing for curb placement on Central Avenue, east and west of Adelaide Street, and on Adelaide Street and Pall Mall Street over the next two weeks
  • Sidewalk work and preparing the roadway for base asphalt on Central Avenue
  • Continued placement of piles north and south of the CP tracks
  • Access to Adelaide Street North from Pall Mall Street will be restricted from October 24 – November 4 for asphalt removals and curb placement in the area
  • Placement of the temporary bridge structures in the north and south CPR track to allow for the construction of the permanent bridge abutments.

Winter work
Work on the Adelaide Underpass phase 1 will continue over the winter months (November 2022 – April, 2023), with the temporary bypass road remaining in place to keep traffic moving. The following scope of work is anticipated to be completed over the winter:
  • Beginning construction of the new pumping station
  • Excavation for a permanent underpass structure
  • Construction of the east and west permanent bridge abutments
  • Construction of permanent ballast walls

With completion of all underground services and infrastructure on Central Avenue, the groundwater cut-off wall, and the supporting walls through the Adelaide St N and CPR intersection, the project is on schedule and moving along well.

They have sunk some shafts on either side of the tracks now. Are continuing to drill out caisson pilings on the north side.

Slowly excavating the approaches to the temporary rail bridges on both the north and south sides. More progress has been made on the excavation for the pump house on the west side where the car wash used to be. The pump house construction is a major part of this project.

Looks like the drilling for caisson pilings may finally be completed with the last of the piling machines now gone.

They have now reached ground level with forming and steel rebar.

Sadly the city website hasn't had an update since last Oct.

They have now assembled a mobile heavy lift crawler crane which they will likely use to lift the steel bridge deck frame into place on the concrete piers. Hard to tell if the deck frame they have assembled to the south side is for a single track or will serve for two rail tracks. Would be nice if the city web page for this project got some updates.

They have now assembled a 2nd mobile heavy lift crawler crane for the bridge deck lift. Still are working on forming and pouring the bridge abutment piers.

Just received an email update from the City. First one in a while, as mentioned in the posts above.

------

If you've traveled by the project area recently, you may have noticed some large cranes on site. These will be used later this month to lift the first of the new rail bridge pieces into place.

This intricate work is being planned in close coordination with CPKC (formerly CP Rail), and will require a three-day closure of Adelaide Street North at the rail crossing beginning August 23, with a second closure planned for September to lift the remaining bridge piece.

To make sure we stay on track for this important milestone, crews will be working over the next two weekends between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. to complete preparatory concrete work. Weekend work is planned for this Saturday, August 12, and Sunday, August 13, as well as the weekend of August 19 and 20.

Thank you for your continued patience while this work is underway, which we recognize can be disruptive at times. We look forward to completing this important project, which will bring improvements to safety and mobility for all road users.

Here is a screenshot from the City's recent Instagram story showing the first of the two bridge pieces!

The temporary bridge structure will be removed tonight and the new bridge piece will be placed at the rail crossing tomorrow.

Adelaide Street North will be closed between McMahen and Elias Streets from September 7 – 9 to lift the second of two rail bridge pieces into place for the Adelaide Underpass project.

The north track bridge has now been lifted and installed. One of the heavy lift mobile crawler cranes has already been disassembled and trucked away. Parade of dump trucks now working with excavator on the south side ramp dig out.
