I love what they have done and are continuing to do at the airport. It really is becoming an impressive airport, a far cry from what it was many years ago.

What's the observation deck going to look like when construction is finished?

But still nothing to address the northernmost gates. Nothing like getting off a flight at midnight in February and having to walk across the tarmac and then a mile indoors to get to baggage claim.

I wondered the same. The video posted by q12 kind of explains it in a vague plan at 19:00.

In the below image, I think the windows in the top right lead to the current observation deck? Seems pretty clumsy since the view would be completely obstructed by the columns, mullions, and reflected interior lights. Maybe they plan to use the space for something else, but it would be a shame to lose the observation deck.

Ugh. I really hope that's not how it's going to be.

There's a new subdivision on Old Guysborough Road, half way between Aerotech Park and Dollar Lake PP.

Runway Estates

I am too. I’ve contributed to a number of articles, but most notably myself and another forumer (mmmatt) are largely responsible for the Moncton article on Wikipedia.

Three things I’ve noticed over the years:

1) - a lot of SSPers had a fascination with SimCity 4 (shouldn’t be much of a surprise really)
2) - a number of SSPers are also Wikipedians
3) - a surprising number of SSPers have entered municipal politics, including at least two current HRM councillors

This is where you watched the planes at YHZ back in the '60s. A garden/patio area where there was only a 3’ high fence separating you from the ramp and the whine of a Viscount’s Rolls-Royce Dart Turboprops or the smell of the kerosene from those new DC-9s! You could also go through a 10 cent turnstile and climb the stairs up to an open Observation Deck

Speaking of Wikipedia... I've been trying to change the awful picture on the Dartmouth page to something that isn't 11 years old, and actually showcases the skyline, but the admin on the page is very against any kind of change.

Did you try to PM the admin? Sometimes they can be very protective of any change (suspicious of vandalism) unless you can justify it.

Cool! The Moncton article looks great. Halifax article needs some work. I would like to also try to bring it up to "Good article" status in the future.

Thanks for posting all these fascinating old pics of YHZ.

The old brochure you posted in the Canada section mentions a 1970s airport master plan. Have you seen that? I would love to track it down next time I visit Halifax.

BTW, I noticed they recently built a new apron at the southern end of the airport, off taxiway J. I wonder if it's meant to be a de-icing pad in the future (as suggested in the 2011 master plan).

Where does it say "Welcome"? Or "International Airport" for that matter?

Firkin & Flyer British Pub is now open where the old legends used to be.

Those chairs look really uncomfortable. Perhaps that is by design to encourage client turnover.
