18 story tower revived, with hopes of later building 35 story neighbor
Great news for long beach , long beach is going through a mini boom right now. I know that specific location very well. I used to live a block away. its on the eastern end of Downtown.. the location creates a huge gap in the Long Beach skyline. Along ocean blvd, on both sides of the blvd its lined with high rises creating a canyon affect, but as soon as u get to this intersection its 2-3 blocks of parking lots. horrible. I hope this gets built.. BUT. I know people in the area will fight this for whatever reason. When this was proposed before the recession hit, downtown residents complained that it would "block the sun and make parking worse" just like they are complaining now if you click on the link and they wanted the towers downsized from 18 and 35 floors, to if I remember correcty, 11 and 16..... I hate people sometimes.

Small world, I lived right there on Bonito/Ocean for a year when I worked at the VA.

I tried to take a peek at One Broadway in Santa Ana, could not reach my camera over the high fence, but looked through gaps in the wood and there is equipment on the site, but they way the site is marked, it looks like the layout for surface parking. Hope I am wrong, but no heavy piling or digging equipment, just a standard bulldozer and areas taped off consistent with how you would lay out a parking lot. Costa Mesa seems hoppin' with a bunch of wood frame wonders going up at Jamboree and several other spots.

Hi WonderlandPark, glad you made it down to OC. I work in Downtown Santa Ana and can confirm that there really isn't much going on at the One Broadway project site. There's always the rumors that permits will be pulled soon, but nothing substantial has been reported yet. And just a side note, the large wood frame wonders you saw off Jamboree (by the 405?) were likely in Irvine. One is the 981-unit apartment complex known as Park Place, and the other is a group of condo clusters known as Central Park West.

Because nothing reminds me of NYC like 8-lane Jamboree Road...

Yes that is the one, its quite a large low-rise project in terms of square footage. Hope One Broadway goes ahead, Santa Ana can use the workers which hopefully help bring lots of foot traffic and support some local restaurants and shops in that area.

Westfield has dropped plans for a hotel tower in the Village at Westfield Topanga project. Everything else still appears to be moving forward, though.

They need to get their act together. Plenty in the community there want urban development, and this is probably Westfield's best ally. Yet they insist on putting that narrow strip of parking along Topanga. What gives? Its not even a lot, just get rid of it!

The ratio of quality to mediocre development in Hollywood is much more favorable than it is in Downtown. In fact, dare I say that Hollywood is seeing more quality than mediocre (even if most are still proposals)? Emerson, Columbia Square, Selma/Vine, Hollywood Palladium, Sunset Bronson, Millennium Hollywood, etc. are all good looking projects that should compensate for the crappiness of BLVD6200 and mediocrity of the Camden project.

Everything else that was recently built came before the recession.

I'm quite impressed by the proposals that we are seeing in Hollywood but I'm surprised by the relative lack of proposals and investments on Hollywood Boulevard. It is probably one of the most trafficked locations in the country and has the famous walk of stars. Every foreign tourist seems to want to go there yet most of it is still rather dilapidated. I would never expect anything of the scale of DT projects there, but I would expect more projects of a reasonable quality to be proposed on the boulevard.

Here's another small project update: the Killefer Flammang-designed and strangely-named NMS@Culver City. It has a few more floors to go, but it's already quite visible throughout most of Downtown Culver City. With all the TOD projects kicking into gear now, the neighborhood will be a very different place in 5 years.
