New Planning Commission presentation for 2/12. Three new items this week, all of them relatively small:

1. A request for the transfer development rights allowing the movement of 12 dwelling units from 908 Penn Avenue to 717 Liberty Avenue (Clark Building) to allow the fit out of the 4th floor for apartments. This doesn't mean the loss of any units at 908 Penn - it already has 25 units - more couldn't be added without subdividing or adding additional floors.

2. Renovations and minor additions to West Liberty Elementary School, which is located in the northern part of Brookline. I think the proposed addition, while rather modern, looks rather smart.

3. A revisiting of the demolition of the (non-historic) "Duff's Building" at 110 9th Street downtown. I'm surprised this is still going forward, because the original reason for the demolition was to allow for a staging area for the Cultural Trust/Parking Authority project, which (at least publicly) remains derailed. Perhaps this means the rumors are correct and they're getting close to an agreement?

Nothing terribly exciting, but good to see local businesses expanding and absorbing existing office space.

One of Pittsburgh's fastest-growing companies is moving to the Frick Building

One of Pittsburgh's fastest-growing young companies is ready to move its headquarters to a historic downtown penthouse.

Currently straddling two locations downtown, Elite Transit Solutions has made a deal with Rugby Realty to take the top two floors of the Frick Building, a lease for 31,500 square feet on Grant Street expected to enable the company to grow from its current headcount of betwee 140 and 150 employees up to 250.

Behind a paywall, but PBT is also reporting that Wabtec (which will be a Fortune 500 company after its merger with GE Transportation) is on the cusp of moving its corporate offices out of Wilmerding and to the North Shore.

Some interesting historical reading. I did a search from 11/23/18, didn't see it posted.

I believe it's just another self-storage building. Nothing fun.

Looks like two buildings at the corner of Penn and S Atlantic in Garfield are going to get a significant expansion.

Looking at the construction permits on the city website I think the two apartment buildings proposed on Waterfront Place in the Strip will begin construction next month. There was a permit in October for site clearing and grading for a March construction of 5 and 6 story apartment buildings.

Other permits were being submitted in November and are moving along in the process.

Finally indeed!

Hopefully the Smallman renovation ends up at least reasonably nice and plays well with the Produce Terminal itself.

Excellent news. The Strip District continues to burn. This will be great for continued office development. I expect this to become a go-to lunch spot.

This development needs to be done in a way that it becomes the focal point of the Strip. I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of having some surface parking in the median. That, to me, just doesn't seem as pedestrian-friendly. It would be nice if they repurposed Smallman as a two-way street with curb-side parking and very wide sidewalks lined with street trees on either side of the street.

Part of the deal was contingent on finding a new location for the Contemporary Craft center. This turned out to be an added bonus, as they've purchased a vacant, industrial building on Butler in Upper Lawrenceville , which will hopefully help bring a little life to that part of the neighborhood.

Oh good! With that, the brewery, and the housing going up between 55th and 56th, that part of Lawrenceville will be much more lively than it has ever been soon. Even with the loss of Neids.

Small but good news.

Lucas Systems expands global HQ north of Pittsburgh, plans to create 55 new jobs

Last week, the international software development firm Lucas Systems announced that they will be expanding their Wexford headquarters in the coming year.

The company will invest $7.3 million in the project and create 55 new full-time jobs on top of its 66 current staffers.

Speaking to NEXTpittsburgh, Lucas Systems Marketing and Communications Manager John Schriefer says the move is necessary to accommodate the company’s growing Pittsburgh team.

“We do all product development, engineering services, customer support, sales, marketing, finance, HR and admin here in Wexford,” says Schriefer.

The company isn’t going far: They will be moving into a 45,000-square-foot building located very near the company’s existing offices at 11279 Perry Highway in Wexford.

The comments on that article are so effing stupid. Why is it that Yinzers are always so negative about new development. Luckily they're dying off though.

Tell me about it! Reminds me of the old out-of-touch fool who said East Liberty is ruined. Hey geezer, it WAS ruined when the buildings were abandoned and boarded up and falling apart! IT SURE AS HELL ISN"T RUINED TODAY!!!
