Superb postcard photo, Adrian.

Here's a windshield view, heading east on Portage almost a half century ago:

That picture of the Eaton's pit - unbelievable. Can you imagine living in a little home and having the Eaton's building being built next door.

And that postcard shows the Avenue Block before expansion. Neato.

Portage Avenue (downtown) used to be one of the best lite streets around, even without including the Christmas lights. I remember growing up and loving night drives down the grand avenue. The section of Portage Ave where Portage Place, IG and the Air Canada building stands today were very actively lite.. created a real sense of activity. Of course the lowend arcades and smut shops in the area didn't make for a great area.

I'm doing some work on the Pump House on Waterfront Drive. Anybody have any historical photos or drawings of the site, and the adjacent buildings? I found the original plans for the building and immediate site, but nothing showing the adjacent steam plant or railway. It's a fascinating building.

I remember looking at the fire insurance plans for the site a few years ago as part of some environmental studies along the waterfront. The historic plans went back to the early 1900's I think, and showed how the area had been used to store coal for the gasification plant. They got reproduced into some reports for the city that are probably confidential though. A trip to the archives would be worth your while.

The Amy Street steam plant was a fairly plain industrial building but it had some nice Art Deco type flourishes. This is the only picture I have of it. I took it in the summer of 1992:

^^Thanks Andy. I found the original drawings for the Pump House and it showed a gasification plant to the west and a building adjacent immediately north. I've never seen pictures of either.

I am going to sneak down to the Archives to check out the Fire Insurance Plans.

There are fire insurance plans at the City Archives (ca. 1911?) that show Victoria Park, which was replaced by the steam plant in 1920 or thereabouts. Quite good detail, of the circular path, park entrances, &c.

I had only really discovered the Amy Street steam plant when it was being demolished, I took some accidentally arty B&W photos of the smoke (steam, I guess?) stacks as the pigeons fled the bang of the wrecking ball. I have always thought it would be a good idea to frame them and sell them to the future residents of The Sky condos.
