I've always liked it even though it looks like a penis with a urethra.

Nothing should be read into that at all.

Beautiful skyscraper that really emphasizes verticality in its design. And a great picture too!

My favourite tower in Montreal by a country mile. Too bad it didn't get it's identical twin. It got a weird hotel instead...

I love the weird hotel! I've stayed there a couple of times. That whole area is a straight throwback to the 1960's and a style of architecture that I think we are all learning to appreciate more and more.

Ottawa doesn't get much skyscraper love (due to lack of height and boring designs) but I love the recently-completed James Flaherty building. Beautiful design, very high-quality materials, and a prominent location make it my favourite in the city.

When the design was originally unveiled, I was underwhelmed, but it turned out very well. It provides a nice contrast to the shades of grey and heavy concrete/stone from surrounding buildings.

Place Ville-Marie. Built as the HQ of Royal Bank of Canada. I.M. Pei & Partners. 188m built in 1962. One of Canada's most iconic buildings.

Current;y the city's 4th tallest, in a few years it'll be at 10th place. Hard to imagine that in less than a decade it won't even be in the top 10 anymore.

PVM is let down by its bunker-like base at street level.

How awesome would it be if the cruciform tower just lifted straight out of a plaza?

It would be like Toronto’s Commerce Court West but 10 years earlier with a more unusual building envelope.

I loved that hotel as well. It was the Delta and also the Hôtel des Gouverneurs I think.

The view from the elevator at night was amazing.

It was recently turned into a private university residence.

My best memory was when it was the Delta. I was there with a bunch of guys from across Canada for a bachelor party. It just so happened that there was an international furry convention at the hotel that same weekend. What an insane mix of great MTL restaurants, gentleman's clubs, and partying with furries!

I've always thought of PVM as Canada's most iconic skyscraper.

Possibly Ottawa's first modern "skyscraper", the Brooke Claxton Building. The 16 storey tower was built as the headquarters for Health Canada in 1961-1964 as a focal point for Tunney's Pasture.

High quality design and materiality compared to most Ottawa office buildings.

I thought that around 1972. I don't think there really is an "iconic skyscraper" in Canada today. Even in Toronto if I say where I work (one of the major King and Bay skyscrapers) to an average non-downtown-frequenting person, I have to laboriously describe the location and building and even then, in most cases, they clearly don't have a picture of it in their heads. Most people just vaguely know that there are a bunch of tall buildings down there where something-or-other goes on ... banking or something.

Trust me, if you say to anyonen in Montreal and in most of Quebec that you are working at Place Ville-Marie, they will know exactly where and what that is. Probably not in the rest of Canada though, for sure. Same thing with the Sun Life building and maybe le 1000 De la Gauchetière, those are the three iconic skyscrapers that almost every Montrealers can identify.

1 PVM is definitely iconic, even if it isn't one of my favorites in Montreal. Plus it is just a massive building, with its cruciform floorplates.

Quote:
At the time of construction, the main tower was known as the tallest skyscraper in the Commonwealth, and was the third tallest skyscraper on earth outside the United States. The equivalent of three floors was added late in the project to ensure that this building would not be topped by the neighboring Tour CIBC which was built at the same time.
woot!
