I actually kind of like the courtyard feel. I would be curious to see how the rest of the house looks.

So on that cheapocrappy twitter thing, was that discussed here before? Like did someone mention how whoever runs that twitter probably has this thread bookmarked? Or is actually a member here? It does say their location is Toronto.

I see that the heritage addition building they posted four hours ago is one I posted a while back. I can't remember where it's from. Possibly a smaller city in Ontario.

From the perspective shown, it looks like the garage footprint is a parallelogram, perhaps triangular or rhomboid.

I think this is the right place to post this.

Belinda is awesome. She nailed it on four of my pet peeves (and introduced me to shiplap!)

- ridiculous trees on buildings (you think that building is actually going to have trees on it? In Canada? Really??)
- goofy container houses (she has extensive commentary in other videos)
- Frank Ghery's idiotic buildings
- glass skyscrapers

None of these make any logical sense yet people "ooh and ahh" about them all the time. Because they've put their brains in neutral.

Outside Vancouver trees on condo towers aren't realistic in Canada. I laugh when I see renderings with trees on rooftops or balconies in Calgary. Our climate can't support much besides ornamental grasses.

I don't know about that. There are tree species that are evasive like weeds. It basically comes down to watering and making sure the trees are shielded from any strong winds. The building itself provides most of that.

I'm definitely not a fan of deconstructionism but I still admire Gehry's work and understand his rise to prominence.

Can't comment on container houses as I haven't lived in one. Certainly is a great adaptive reuse and I'm all for reusing and reducing things. Recycling ain't being green.

I don't have issue with glass either; only bad planning/design

How hard is it to do something like this with a budget to buy annuals every year for the building?

Why is Canadian Architecture so bad?
This is actually a pretty good read from the Walrus. Maybe not meme enough for this thread, though.

I know what you mean by saying not meme enough. I skimmed through the article. It depends on the philosophy and audience of the publication regarding whether you want to put a bunch of pictures for the reader to look at or rely solely on text to get the point across. Would it have hurt if they put some visual examples? They talk about recent beautiful architecture and some that have mixed reviews. Why no pics? Kind of essential to this piece, no?

Anyway, interesting link you posted. It makes some good points. Helpful for guys like me that only dabble in architecture and are not all that serious about it.

An interesting read, but yeah, how about some pictures?

Pictures would have been nice, but isn't part of the Walrus's conceit kind of that it's all written form with the odd illustration?

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. Comes across as super arrogant to suggest the reader doesn’t need any pics whatsoever. Our readership is too sophisticated for that!

Good read. Not sure if the fiscally conservative, shortsighted cheapness towards architecture is a purely Canadian phenomenon though. The U.S. has some of the most deplorably ugly suburbs on earth. I think it's a North American thing more than just Canadian.

The article cherry picks one project in Ottawa and fails to address that Canadian real estate is a global commodity than housing/work space driven by Canadians homeowners/ workers. Look how many European architects are working here accepting the same spandrel heavy window wall.

Repetition, cheap and, tacky is everywhere. Buyers/investors don't care how a building looks or, worst of all, don't know bad from good.

The snouthouses in Calgary are evolving. They appear to be streamlining their form to be even more of a garage with a semi detached home in the rear. I saw one yesterday that made my eyes bleed but it must be too new to show on streetview. There was a false wall above the garage at the front that looked like a turret. It was basically a garage / bunker with not a single window on the front of the building. At first I thought the wall had a rooftop patio on it but no. It was literally a wall to nowhere. A fortress wall.

Anyways, here are some other examples of the new proto snout house species:

I think the one that I saw was based off the "Banff model" seen here. Except instead of a triangular roof peak above the garage there was a flat square fortress defense wall that didn't even connect to the rest of the structure.

More like, I want to live in a box with no windows.

Hence why I called it a garage with an attached home in the rear.

Behold some stacked snouts:

At least they have windows.
