Living above 50th floor.

You would like to live above the 50th floor, either as a renter or an owner. How many choices does your city offer?

None! The Seattle area tops out at 43 (uc), 42 (uc), 42, 39 (uc), 37 (uc), 37 (uc)... In fact, the developable highrise sites are generally zoned either 450' (in Bellevue) or 400' (some edges of Downtown Seattle), with even smaller parts of Seattle at 500' or unlimited, but even then the unlimited area has barely any developable sites. (Proposals are typically 10% more than the zoned height to allow mechanical and architectural tops.)

The one potential to top 500' is Triad's planned redevelopment of the former Public Safety Building site across from City Hall. To make the project feasible and still get a free public plaza and subway entrance, the City agreed to a spot rezone to 520'. Even then it's only 42 stories including offices on the lower levels.

Austin has one residential building under construction now (up to the 12th floor).

The Austonian will be 683 feet/208 meters tall with 56 floors. It is all residential, condos. It'll be the tallest residential building from Los Angeles to New Orleans and from Austin to Chicago.
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=124186

Other planned towers.

T. Stacy Tower - 830 feet/253 meters tall with 70 floors. That one would be a hotel/condo tower.
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=131529

The redevelopment of the Green Water Treatment Plant in downtown will contain at least one 725 foot residential building. It's said to have 54 floors. There's another tower in the complex that is supposed to be 52 floors, but it seems to be shorter, maybe 580 feet.

The highest existing residential floor in Austin is at 360 Condominiums, Austin's new tallest building which just opened this summer. It has 44 floors and is 563 feet tall. This is to the spire, the roof height is 472 feet tall. Counting the spire, it is taller than Frost Bank Tower (515 feet).

Others (under construction).

42 floors
36 floors
36 floors

I have been thinking to myself if I ever do live in a high-rise it would have to be greater than 100 stories.

It would be simply too embarrassing to say I live on one of the double digit floors. I would rather say I will meet you at the 129th floor and let you in.

Anything less would be pure ignominy on my part.

You've got two current choices in San Francisco: Millennium (645' 58 fl.) and One Rincon Hill (641' 55 fl.).

None and none planned. Closest option is down in Malmö, Turning Torso.

Houston... do houseplanes count???

LOL, j/k. From my understanding, there are a few high-priced residences within the Williams Tower, but it's obviously not a public thing. So for Houston, the answer is none.

according to emporis, there are 45 skyscrapers in chicago, completed and under construction, that have residences that are 50 stories in the air or higher. and i live in one of those buildings (marina city west - 60 stories), though i'm only on the lowly 33rd floor

For now, there's only one option for Philadelphia - The Residences at Two Liberty Place, up to the 58th floor. Bridgman's View Tower, if it ever happens, would offer residences up to the 66th floor. There are only five 50-story+ buildings in Philadelphia currently anyway and they're completely or mostly office space. There are, though, a few proposals and built structures that are just short of the mark. American Commerce Center, if built, wouldn't have residences.

I once live on the 59th floor and then the 46th floor of the Hancock, but now I live on the first floor of a one floor building.

0 residences above 50 floors in Pittsburgh. Unless a CEO is sleeping under his desk in one of our tallest office buildings.

You can't live any higher than the 15th floor in the Quad Cities....

LeClaire Apartments, Moline. (circa 1922)

The most expensive is on the 12th floor of this Rock Island apartment.
Steepmeadow, circa 1962

We do have some squatty buildings in the works.
Riverfront condo. Davenport.

Mixed use highrise with apartments on top. Moline.

(last two pics are from http://absolutedsm.com/)

Nothing will ever be as high as 50 floors, though.

The highest options in Minnesota are the 46th floor in downtown St. Paul, or the 39th floor in downtown Minneapolis.

Charlotte has none that high now, but has a 50 floor under construction condo tower (the Vue), and a 42 floor under construction condo tower (Wachovia). These will be the two tallest residential towers in the city when complete. There is also an active proposal for a ~39 floor hotel/residential (Twelve) and on-hold plans for several more (Trump, 53 floor 210 Trade, 300 South Tryon, etc.)

50 floor Vue condo tower - under construction

42 floor Wachovia condo tower - under construction
