New Alex Fraser counterflow lane won't be ready until December, at the earliest

Quote:
Updated #AlexFraser timeline from BC's Ministry of Transportation:
•Begin pre-installation testing of electrical and equipment next week
•Install counterflow signs by late November
•Test overall system through to early December
•Launch counterflow by the end of the year

I was back in BC earlier this month to visit and drove SB a few times during the PM rush hour over the bridge with the extra lane.

The SB delay is largely gone, so that's a positive for now.

I've driven northbound over the bridge during the PM rush a few time since this new lane was added and was surprised to see how well traffic is flowing. I guess the two through lanes for the 91 keep traffic flowing smoothly

Pretty impressive difference with these two "minor" changes.

I drive the 91 everyday. The Knight St/#6 road merge going East is really showing its lack of capacity.

It doesn't help that everyone wants to be in the left lane, even Semi's

Once over the train tracks after Nelson its smooth sailing though!

Alex Fraser widening

Can someone explain to me ,how the counter flow will help North bound traffic , when it’s still only three lanes after you get off the bridge ?

It's 4 lanes until the Cliveden Exit.

It was 4 lanes northbound this morning.
Reduced backups on Nordel Way, but a choke point at the north end of the bridge.
People still reported time savings.

not suprised about the bottleneck at the north end of the bridge, because you always have idiots/assholes who try to change lanes last second before the 91a ramp, causing people to hit the brakes

The real reason is that you have four lanes merging to three...

Anyone here agree this is another half assed BC highway project . Lack of cats eyes reflectors, lack of shoulder lines, a new big bump at the south end of the bridge. Why haven't they put in cats eyes reflectors at the south end and the Nordel Way offramps? Why no repainted shoulder lines on the bridge deck ? Why no cats eyes reflectors north bound on the north end continuing to the 91A split?
70 plus million dollars and highway maintenance trucks every night and they can't even get simple stuff like that right .
And what's with that bump on the South end of the bridge deck . Again 70 million and they couldn't repaint the lines on the 91A or fix that bump in the middle lane of the 91A just before the 91A split .
What do those highway maintenance guys do all day and night long ?

lanes still not painted at the north end of the bridge

in the rain/dark people weave all over the place with no idea where the lanes are going

Don't forget the 2 ridiculous on ramps from Clive den when it should be only 1 plus the 4th left lane merging into the other lane all at the same point .

A fourth northbound lane on the Annacis Channel crossing would do wonders. They could squeeze another lane in at the expense of shoulders or lane widths.

There are cats eyes that you can see at night. But they really do need to paint the lines in that section immediatly.

The southbound counterflow, when it opened, expanded into its own, new lane.
Now, the fast lane flows directly into the counterflow (which is probably a better arrangement).

It can understandably be very confusing at highway speed for those who aren't familiar with the new layout, especially since the reflectors almost disappear completely in the rain.

So the barrier moving machine is now operational? How has rush hour congestion changed with the added lane?

Yes, it sure would, and would naturally fit the present split where the 3 lanes spit into two two-lane options (one exit goes west on 91 and one goes up to 91A) -- the 4-lane northbound configuration would essentially mean that the left two lanes go to 91 and the right two lanes go to 91A.

realistically they should be expanding the 91 to 3 lanes each way from that point, all the way west. so it would become 3-lanes to the 91, 2 lanes to the 91A from the now 4 lanes on the bridge.

i would be curious to see the 6-lane plans since it was built for a 6 lane configuration back in the 1980s.
