Police are working with officials from the Downtown Austin Alliance on a proposal in which the group would buy as many as 20 security cameras for high-crime areas, including the Sixth Street entertainment district.

"There is a great interest within downtown businesses that are vested in the safety of downtown," said Assistant Police Chief David Carter, who is the department's chief of staff.

Downtown would be one of two areas of the city to receive the devices, which would be mounted in public areas of the city, in coming months. Cameras in the area of Rundberg Lane and Interstate 35 would be bought using federal money, officials said.
