The Boston City Hall really doesn't deserve the hate it gets. It has some really nice facade patterns. It's like a symphony of geometric shapes and high quality concrete, and there was certainly a lot of thought put into the building.
It's beautiful in its own avant-garde way, not by the standards of traditional architecture. I think the main reason it sees a lot of disdain is because it's in the "dated" stage, where basically anything that reminds one of its era is seen as ugly. However, once people grow out of that it is appreciated for the icon it is. It has happened to many different styles of architecture thoughout history.
We are losing a lot of nice brutalist buildings recently, so I hope nothing will ever happen to this one.
There are plenty of thoughtless, nasty, cheap developer-designed messes that are far more deserving of 'ugliest building in the world.'
Like this one on the last page, was there any thought whatsoever put into this design? It's not sleek, it has no cool facade, it has nothing of architectural value whatsoever.
