Just another cool winter's day. They've come down from the rooming houses, or in on the red cars, or they've parked the Buick on the dirt lot above First Street, they've had their coffee, their hash, their bacon and eggs, their sweet roll and now they're crossing a busy sidewalk to their jobs, a jeweler, a pawnbroker, a salesgirl at Boos Brothers, an usher at Talley's...

They're thinking about hot prospects, or about that new salesgirl with the red hair or about the way the kids had laughed at breakfast...they're thinking about a lunch date or another cup of coffee or stealing an hour or two to...well, you know...

They listen to Sister Aimee, Father Coughlin and Fighting Bob Shuler and mostly they believe in miracles. Didn't Sister Aimee drown at Venice Beach and come ashore in Bisbee, Arizona? Yes she did. Ah, miracles. A touch of the hand, a voice raised in song and the blind shall see, the cripple will rise up out of his chair and dance a jig. Miracles. Except at work. At work they believe in being on time and not making waves. The stock market has crashed but the ripples have yet to sweep across this particular sidewalk...but they've heard and they know hard times are coming...

They're trying to recall Mayor Porter because he's a man not to be trusted but they're going to come up short. He'll serve out his term. In a couple of years, they're going to elect Frank Shaw. He'll teach them to look back on the John C. Porter recall as the good old days.

A young man hurrying to an appointment wishing he had a hat to wear and maybe if he talks fast enough they won't notice his bare head, kids on a shopping trip, maybe to Hamburger's, the older brother feeling the responsibility and fingering the loose change in his pocket, a couple of fast operators pleased with themselves and their good fortune...

And on they come, a veritable tide, each with their private hopes, their private dreams and their private demons as well, each moving inexorably toward an unseeable future...the Great Depression is waiting and another world war...

This is a rare oddity!

starting bid $100 dollars on ebay

"Tourists play on D.W. Griffith Intolerance statue 1910s."

I agree with the seller that this oversized facsimile of a statue is a movie prop...but Intolerance?
To me the statue seems too grotesque for the famous Babylonian scene. I thought maybe the statue was from another Griffith film like
'Julia of Bethulia' (1914), or any D.W. Griffith film with a sequence in Hell.

..perhaps the seller is correct and this is indeed from the iconic Intolerance.

John V G Posey was a son of Oliver, who built the familiar 8 Chester Place in 1900 before selling it after little more than a year to Edward Doheny. It's interesting to me that, although by a different architect, 650 West 23rd seems almost a vague, less busy miniature of the parental residence, even as far as original exterior wall and roof colors went. (OK, maybe you really have to squint.) John Posey manufactured wood products, specializing in spruce piano soundboards which he sold to various piano makers; the senior Posey stayed in West Adams for a decade or so after selling #8 to Doheny, then moved to Pasadena; John moved his company to Washington State in 1909.

GW, do you know if the house is owned by the college? It's fronted by the same wall that encloses all the campus' 23rd St buildings, and is all but surrounded by Building 4, but does not appear on MSM Doheny Campus maps (although the wall does):

I thought maybe the sign said "Evangelist" above Mr. Comstock's name, so I did a Google search for Evangelist Stanley Comstock and found a news article from Lima 1942.

The house was built by Posey on a lot within the original bounds of Chester Place, which would account for the wall; while his parents had sold #8 to the Dohenys in 1901, perhaps they had acquired the lot from William J Davis (who had built #2--the lot on which 650 sits appears to have been part of #2's lot originally). I've read that Sarah Posey sold to the Dohenys because she didn't like being in her giant new house alone while her husband went off to run his mines; perhaps after selling #8, the Poseys bought the piece from the Davises, planning a smaller house of their own, but then, after John got married in 1904, gave it to him...maybe Newsom actually first planned it for the parents, accounting for the similarity. There are a lot of references to 650 being a house owned by a member of the Severance family, including in the Gebhard-Winter guide, but I haven't seen any CD listings or newspaper items connecting it to a Severance, at least not yet. Rather than being a private house, 650 seems to be occupied currently by the Congregation of the Missions, some sort of Catholic men's organization.
