And tragically, from what Leftcoaster (who apparently has seen renders) has suggested, the new Sears sounds like it will be the final nail in the coffin for this corner's chance as Vancouver's Times Square.
And why does Vancouver need a Times Square exactly? So we can put a check mark on some arbitrary, subjective list of what it takes to be a "world class city"? I don't see the point. I like the way Granville Street is developing with all it's neon and LED light poles. It has a unique vibe already. Sears could definitely use innovative lighting effects, but I wouldn't want them to go overboard with it like some of the buildings in Dundas Square.

As long as they get rid of that horrendous top portion (the part with the ad screens on that April Fools render), i'll be fine with the redesign.

Wow, you guys are out to lunch.

It is not about trying to be someone's definition or "world class" or building a literal "Times Square." Not in the slightest. It is about honouring the original spirit of Granville Street and its rich legacy as the heart of Vancouver nightlife and entertainment, with its colourful neon lights, visually dynamic signs and electric energy, which dates back to at least the 1920s.

With the replacement of the Optical Building and the refurbishment of the Sears Building, Vancouver had an excellent opportunity to restore the integrity of that part of Granville with buildings whose exteriors acknowledge (and, ideally, add to) the street's true spirit and character, currently and historically.

It is about being Vancouver.

I would like the large screens on this building as well, but at the same time we are not in NY's or Tokyo's league and probably never will be. Most people that don't have to be here in the winter, aren't by choice. Still just a big tourist town in my eyes.

All summer long the VIVA Vancouver program has had the lower part of Granville street blocked off to buses and stuff... with nothing happening on it, makes you wonder the purpose of this pretend weekend festival closures???.

Sears began their liquidation sale yesterday. A receiver has taken over the store and everything is 10 - 30% off. No other flyers or company sales apply and all sales are final. Word got out quickly and the store was very busy by the afternoon.

Huh? Since when did Sears seek bankruptcy protection?

^The way the clerks explained it was Sears is no longer in charge of the stores stock or liquidating it. It's fallen to a second party whom they called a 'receiver' ; did they use the wrong terminology s211?

Compared to the average Sears, that is very busy. Clearly, stock is going fast.

I would have to think they might have been loose with their terminology. Generally, receivers are those that sell goods in the context of a bankruptcy.

some people use "Receivers" and "Liquidators" interchangeably - probably because they don't know why they are different legal / financial terms.

the main floor and basement were always busy - the rest of the store was always a ghost town
