I like some of these developments that are preserving the history of Toronto at street level by keeping the old house facades, but sticking towers on top, set back from the street a little bit. It's a great way to add density while not totally destroying the past. And the last two examples are at least tastefully done, if not a little bit visually awkward.

^ They did some similar things in NY and elsewhere if I recall correctly. It's very interesting indeed, but in many cases, I think it would be more symbolic than actually significant to the visual aspects and the feel of the streetscape, at least in a European context.

I assume buildings like these would require the demolition of whole blocks within Central Paris. This is simply because the footprints of modern buildings are usually larger than those much older and smaller of the historic fabric, and usually far larger. That's also why the clash between modernist boosterism and strict preservationists.
