Winston-Salem:
Salem Fountain
Designed by Wood & Perot (1857)
For years, this 164 year old fountain was used as a planter. A few years ago, a researcher was writing a book on the Philadelphia iron works company, Wood & Perot. He was looking for examples of their work that are still around and what condition they are in. No one really knew much about it until this researcher showed-up and asked about it. He told them they should never fill it with plants. Fertilizer and iron aren't a good combination. After learning of its history, the fountain was restored and is now a fountain again. It's near buildings from the 1700s and 1800s, directly behind a building designed by famous architect Alexander Jackson Davis. I've seen it and it's in a beautiful park/gardens setting.

I think there are three fountains from the 1800s in that neighborhood? The neighborhood borders downtown Winston-Salem to the south.
