This is a huge stone house that is on its own little outcrop of the Escarpment. Totally inaccessible.

Stone Second Empire, no longer a house

Rock Castle, 1848. This house is built literally on the slope of the Niagara Escarpment overlooking Corktown. Apparently the interior of this house is spectacular, with 10 foot ceilings, moulded archways and elaborate curving staircases. Currently, the owners themselves live in the largest of 5 apartments. The property is difficult to access, so there is no good view of the house. Three and a half storeys face the opposite side, overlooking Hamilton and Hamilton Harbour.

Nice pictures! I don't remember some of these houses on the edge of the Escarpment. What neighborhood threads are those from?

Awesome! I was going to start mentioning my favourites but the list became too vast so to name just a couple I definitely loved the Sandyford Place and the Modern. Thanks for sharing.

it really does look like those parts of montreal that are right up against the western mountain, from st. henri through lower westmount to summit circle.

I'm surprised to see houses like these in Hamilton, I would only expect to see such huge mansions in the Bridle Path neighborhood of Toronto.

Hamilton was once a wealthy and prosperous city. Even today there are many large mansions being built in the Hamilton area, especially in Ancaster, Flamborough and all around the Escarpment behind Burlington. The Niagara Escarpment provides some of the best natural scenery in Southern Ontario and there is a lot of wealth in the Golden Horseshoe.
