It looks like they started running the auger cast system on April 9. They've done maybe eight or ten so far. I haven't had much of a chance to watch, but I can tell you that I REALLY appreciate how quiet this system is.

Overview.

Detail of the drill area.

Yeah, I noticed them useing the screw today when I was walking by the site. Things will
start to get noisy when they start the impact pile driving... just not as loud as at the Towers site way-back-when.

^ No picture is shown... just a red X.

Right now they are applying pressure to test the test piles.

I have to say, I'm impressed with how quickly the Tsakopoulos family has moved on this tower after approval.

In fact, very quickly from demolition of the old Wells Fargo Building to construction activity..

I also have to say that this tower has really grown on me.

While I'm still not thrilled with the design as a whole. I'm really liking the Capitol Mall facing (northern exposure)...

This is going to really look sharp and stand out on Capitol Mall when complete...

Screw Pile and the process

Here is the screw that drills into the ground 60 or 70 feet. In this picture the
drill is coming out of the ground and at the same time concrete is being
pumped into the hole from the hose that is vertical to the drill and comes
off the rig.

Over flow concrete being removed from the surface of the drilled screw pile hole.

Rebar columns that will be inserted into the drilled hole filled with concrete.

Concrete trucks

Clearing the drilled hole for a 70 foot steel rod that will be inserted first.
The man on the far left has the rod that will go into this hole.

A bigger shot of the steel rod.

The top of the steel rod now submerged into the screw pile hole.

The rig is now lifting the rebar that will also be inserted into the hole.

Down it goes.

Finished. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

Faster and quieter than pounding them in. Good stuff.

So then they actually create a pile (after drilling the hole to put the rebar and then fill it with concrete?) Is that correct?

Wonderful photos Mike......

Almost correct. When they are drilling the hole and it’s almost to it's final depth,
they will start to pump concrete into the hole while it's still drilling.
Once the drill is at it's final depth, they will continue to pump concrete into the
hole pushing out dirt and concrete for several minutes. When the drill is
being removed, concrete will continue to be pumped into the hole. There is lots
of overflow of concrete during this whole process of pumping in the concrete so
two mini bulldozers are constantly pushing away the excess overflow of concrete and
move it to a pile over by N Street to be hauled away in trucks.

^ Sounds like a pretty wasteful process, something you wouldn't expect given today's high material costs. I hope they're recycling that overflow concrete somewhere offsite.

According to this November 15th... this may or may not be accurate because
the project got held up when Caltrans sued and delayed the start of construction.
I think late December or January?
