My place is still stuck in 2015. I guess it makes the pavement on my street look a little nicer.

Saw the Google Street car today on Baseline heading east from Robertson, past Queensway Carleton Hospital and then turning south on Greenbank. The car had California plates.

An "essential service" I guess

Yeah, I saw it on Wednesday trolling the parking lot of the former IKEA in Bells Corners.

Circa 1985 to circa 1995. Today it’s called the Stafford Centre.

Thanks! I was 5 or 6 when they moved to Pinecrest, so I may never have seen the original location for myself.

Yes Ikea was in the Stafford Centre, they took it out when I was in High School. Ikea was where the Winners and Planet Fitness are now. The mall used to be shaped differently, but they demolished the section on the right when Ikea moved and built the little L shaped addition on the bottom left. There was a well known restaurant that moved from the main building to the new addition when it opened, I think it was called 'West Side Grill'. Other new tenants in the new section that I remember were Quiznos and 'The IBM Store'.

That Ikea was part of a 'small store' concept Ikea tried out in a couple of smaller markets that they normally wouldn't bother with. It's amazing to me that Ottawa has progressed in the 27 years since I started high school to the point that we now have the LARGEST store in Canada.

"West End Station".

I remember going to that old IKEA several times; my parents liked to frequent The Butchery, which used to also be located in that section on the right and has since moved to the other end of the main building.

WEST END STATION!!! Thank you! I didn't even realize the 'new' location in the 'new' addition to the mall was closed until I looked it up today.

The Butchery is AMAZING! Definitely a hidden gem for those not from the west end. They have the best selection of meats in the city, really high quality, and some really high end options for special occasions. I got a couple of Australian Master Wagu steaks last year for father's day and they were spectacular. Oh, and yes that Ikea store was the worst! Especially if you compare it to the next version on Pinecrest and then the current edition.

Don't forget to grab a burger at Vera's Burger Shack while you're in the store.

Google Earth now has satellite imagery available for June 2021. I surrounded in red new neighbourhoods under construction to show how crazy the sprawl is.

Someone needs to get these photos to the Hunt Club Woods so Karen can crawl out from behind her Scotch Pine and protest, STAT! (that is, assuming the Karens native to the Hunt Club Woods care about any other sprawl, or just those from their sprawl/infill townhouses backing onto the current border of the woods.

This is exactly the kind of sprawl that should be avoided. Makes me feel ill driving around these new neighbourhoods way out there.

Love to see infill developments! I've been waiting years for Orleans to become more concise and compact, looks great from above too. Maybe my dream of the Cumberland-transitway will come true...

Barrhaven :
I know it's been discussed numerous times... but the fact that there is no access to the 416 at either Barnsdale or Cambrian is mindboggling.

There is an interchange at Bankfield just a touch further south... but that is really only convenient for those travelling back into the city from the 401, or heading south. Otherwise if you live in southern Barrhaven (Stonebridge/Half Moon Bay) you have to back track to the 416 to travel back north.

On a related note... when is that Greenbank re-alignment and new bridge over the Jock going to happen? That's another thing that has been talked about for what seems like decades.

In Google Maps Satellite view,
why some cities have very good 3D view (Ottawa, Toronto, New York, London, Paris, ...)
but other important modern cities do not (Dubai, Seoul, Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Moscow, Jakarta, ...) ??

The plates tell you exactly nothing about who is driving the car.
