Breaking: Multiple fatalities, 1 unaccounted for after Kelowna crane collapse

This is just awful

UPDATE: Multiple fatalities, 1 unaccounted for after Kelowna crane collapse

(UPDATE: July 12 @ 3:20 pm) - Officials have now said that today's crane collapse in downtown Kelowna has resulted in "multiple confirmed fatalities."

RCMP Insp. Adam MacIntosh confirmed the reports moments ago and added that one person was still unaccounted for as well.

The missing person is reportedly not from the work crew that was on site today, but no further details were provided.

Terrible, one person has now been reported dead. Unfortunately these things happen in construction from time to time.
edit: Has of course been updated to multiple fatalities.

Don't forget the crane collapse during the hurricane in Halifax the other year too.

I was really concerned for my friend who has a business located in the building next to this development. He's fine, but look at the neighbouring office.

Luckily, no one was in the room when this happened.

Tragic

Curious to know what transpired during the removal process. I wonder if they somehow released or disrupted the counter-weights

I believe somebody died working in that building though. They are missing.

That business park has a super tight community. I've met quite a few of the business owners there over the years. There's a great guy that lives in the park who's the building's caretaker. I hope he's ok.

I heard that the death toll is now 4. Edit: 5, as pointed out in the above post.

Lots of F-sharps sprinkled in there. Interesting about the obvious lack of correct PPD. That's not going to look very good on the GC...

From my experience being on site for nearly a decade, serious injuries are often a series of unfortunate events as opposed to random or distinct incidents.

I agree with you Cold. (we both were on one that had catastrophic results after an incident) However this may be a one off. I don't believe the GC will be found responsible. What ever happened up the crane at the time was outside the GCs area of expertise even though it was under his directions.

When I go on sites to this day I always not saftey concerns. if there is a constant concern during construction then it can be used is an indicator if something happens. By the way who is the GC on this one.

I think it's Stemmer Construction. BTW, two of the founder's sons are fatalities.

GC is responsible to enforce PPD though. That video is pretty damning.

Even if it has nothing to do with the incident it speaks to the quality control on site.

Those guys (on a normal job site) wouldn't have been able to walk in like that.

In situations like this, lot's of people will be getting dragged into the civil suits, insurance, etc.
