^ They just used the traditional tile that's some kind of ceramics, i believe. I'm okay with it but damn, the platforms themselves still look nasty. They obviously did nothing about them yet, indeed.

Créteil-Pompadour
A new RER station opened today on the RER D, it replace the nearby Villeneuve Prairie which was next to nothing.
The area around Créteil-Pompadour is also very underdeveloped but this station has a connection with the bus lines TVM and 393. Two busway lines.
The TVM is one of the busiest bus line in Paris with approx 60,000 daily passengers.
The station is pretty simple, a simple evelated box with an island platform with a footbridge connecting to the bus stop.

The TVM and 393 bus stop

The footbridge connecting the RER station with bus stop

Grand Paris Express
Nothing new but some maps of the lines and planned opening dates

Line 11 (extension)
  • Note that this map doesn't highlight the current extension Mairie des Lilas / Rosny Bois-Perrier which should open in 2019
  • Rosny Bois-Perrier / Noisy-Champs : 2025

Line 14 (extension)
  • St-Lazare / Mairie de Saint-Ouen (STIF/RATP) : 2017
  • Mairie de Saint-Ouen / Saint-Denis Pleyel : 2023
  • Olympiades / Villejuif IGR : 2023
  • Villejuif IGR / Aéroport d’Orly : 2027

Line 15
  • Pont-de-Sèvres / Noisy-Champs : 2020
  • Pont-de-Sèvres / Nanterre : 2025
  • Saint-Denis Pleyel / Rosny-Bois Perrier : 2025
  • Nanterre / Saint-Denis Pleyel : 2027
  • Rosny-Bois Perrier / Champigny Centre : 2030

Line 16
  • Saint-Denis Pleyel / Noisy-Champs : 2023
The line 16 and 17 have a shared part between Saint-Denis Pleyel and Le Bourget RER
I will soon write a more complete post about the line 16 and all its stations.

Line 17
  • Le Bourget RER / Triangle de Gonesse : 2025
  • Triangle de Gonesse / Aéroport Charles de Gaulle (T4) : 2027
  • Aéroport Charles de Gaulle (T4) / Le Mesnil-Amelot : 2030

Line 18
  • CEA Saint-Aubin / Massy : 2023
  • Massy / Aéroport d’Orly : 2027
  • CEA Saint-Aubin / Versailles Chantiers : 2030
The part between Versailles Chantiers and La Defense is planned for a more distant future.

I'm still stunned at this. It's big, no doubt. Should we expect delays? I'd be surprised if there was none to such a huge thing. Heck I can't wait, though.

And add the other metro extension planned to open before 2030 that are not part of Grand Paris Express project.

  • Line 12 to Aubervilliers

  • Line 11 to Rosny-Bois-Perrier

Before 2030
  • Line 7 to Bourget RER
  • Line 1 to Val-de-Fontenay
  • Line 10 to Ivry
  • Line 9 to Murs-à-Pêches (Montreuil)
  • Line 12 to Issy RER
That's over 25km added to the 200 km of Grand Paris Express project.
The decade 2020-30 should be the busiest since a long time for Paris metro extension.
Infact Paris metro could add more km than any other subway network in the so called "western world"!

Obviously there are the delay and other surprises.
I am not god, so I don't know but we should expect this.

Well, from what we've seen so far, Tokyo's really from another dimension. But I agree, in the end China will logically take over anything.

Would they even need to? I thought the city was pretty much all built out. They are converting some at-grade rail lines to be elevated lines, however. They also seem to be building more intercity rail.

I can't believe Tokyo need any new lines, they've allready got an unbeatable system, as do other Asian countries, that's why it's so important for older subways like paris, London and New York, to expand and improve ours, London is in the middle of massive investment, crossrail being just one, and paris has plans too, so we won't fall behind asia, new high speed rail was very important so I am happy we are getting hs2, and France allready has an extensive hsr

Minato could tell about it better than I, but I think construction of the line 15 Noisy-Champs to Pont-de-Sèvres link, the one to operate the sooner is to begin very soon if it hasn't kind of begun yet. For real, this is no joke. The needs are too pressing.

There's also an expansion to the western suburbs of the line E of the RER network, up to Mantes-la-Jolie that's not even a part of that GPE plan but is just as needed.

This is over 50 kilometers long and widely funded yet. It should be operational by 2020. It's about time.

Only in the end of 2015 for the start of work for the line 15.

Anyway in 2014, we will the start of the works for the line 4 southern extension and the beginning of tunneling for line 14 northern extension.
Works for the line 11 extension should begin at the end of 2014.

In 2017, two metro extensions should open.
-Line 12 to Mairie d'Aubervilliers, 2 stations (tunneling work is done).
-Line 14 to Mairie de Saint Ouen, 4 stations (tunneling will begin in 2014).

Note that if there are also big renovation under way for all the RER lines.
A new tunnel between Chatelet-les-Halles and Gare du Nord is in project.
A new branch of the RER D linking Villiers-le-Bel with Parc des Expostion (transfer with RER B) serving Triangle de Gonesse should open by 2020.

The SK people mover uses a rather unusual technology for its propulsion since it calls on horizontal cable pulled technology. Neerman's design for the SK was destined to ADP and tested on the airport premises. Johan Neerman was in charge of providing the first sample that would be reproduced in bigger amounts later on. The platform rests on tyres offering adherence, quick acceleration and deceleration and also a decent air suspension. It has timeless design with a large front bay window enhancing the traveler to have mainly a front view. One has to mention that the SK system is always in motion and only slows down in station but never really stops except in case of emergency.
This system had been intensively tested before brought to the market by having real embarking and disembarking scenarios. The technology of the body of the SK is a double polyester molded skin and assembled containing all functional features and functionalities.

Four SK lines were built in Paris metropolitan during the 1990's but only one was opened to passengers and it is not anymore in service.

One line was built to in the car park of the Villepinte Exhibition center.
It was rather useless, it wasn't so much faster than walking.

Two lines were built to serves CDG airports, the two lines were almost fully completed but the line 1 had serious technical issues and the second while working well has not been not opened.
The infrasctructure oif the first line of CDG was reused for the driverless CDGVAL line 1.

One line was constructed in Noisy-le-Grand (eastern suburbs).
This line was built to link the RER station and the mall of Noisy le Grand Mont d'Est with an housing complex called Mail-Horizons.
This complex was never built due to the bankruptcy of the developer.
As the area of the project where is located the second station is a wasteland, the line has never been opened.

Why is it so good? Why??

I understand that the US' discomfort with public spending will never allow rail networks like those of Paris but we could definitely up our architecture/design game.
