New Brunswick-born pitcher Rhéal Cormier died of cancer earlier this week.

Former Canadian major league pitcher Rhéal Cormier, 53, dies of cancer

Canadian pitcher Rhéal Cormier, who spent 16 years in the major leagues, died Monday after a battle with cancer.

The native of Moncton, N.B. was 53. The Philadelphia Phillies, one of Cormier's former teams, confirmed his passing.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of former relief pitcher Rheal Cormier after a courageous battle with cancer," the club tweeted.

The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame says Cormier ranks second all-time for games pitched by a Canadian with 683.

"I am shocked and saddened to learn of Rheal's passing," said Baseball Canada president Jason Dickson. "He was a tremendous pitcher and competitor who represented our country on the biggest stage. Above all, Rheal was a great person and family man who will be dearly missed."

A sixth-round pick by the St. Louis in 1988, Cormier broke into the big leagues with the Cardinals three years later. After being traded to Boston (1995), Cormier was shipped to the Montreal Expos in 1996.

Cormier spent two years with Montreal before finishing his major-league career with Boston (1999-2000), Philadelphia (2001-06) and Cincinnati (2006-07). For his career, Cormier was 71-64 with a 4.03 earned-run average.

Cormier's best year was 2003 with Philadelphia when he was 8-0 as a reliever with a 1.70 ERA. According to the Phillies, that was the second-lowest among relievers and sixth-lowest by any club reliever in the modern era (since 1900).

Cormier made 84 appearances the following season, the most ever by a left-handed Philadelphia pitcher. The franchise said in a statement it was also the second-most among any pitcher and remains the most logged in a year by a Phillies player in the last 33 seasons.

More on the Tampa-Montreal Rays sister city concept coming up again. Tampa is puttting a Montreal sign up in their stadium for the playoffs. Still don't see how this works, but interested to hear more.

I badly want the spos' back but I hate this shared team concept. Hopefully they're just easing their way into moving the team permanently. Sucks for Tampa fans though.

I think whichever city actually gets a new stadium started first will end up with the team permanently. I can't see the Rays owner footing the bill for 2 parks, and I can't see either city fronting stadium projects for half a season each. I don't care what kind of spin the team puts on the other uses of the stadium, you aren't going to replace half a season of MLB crowds (and revenue) with those events.

I haven't heard any new stadium news in Montreal in a while. Maybe its in the works and they're keeping it hush.

That would mean Montreal would have to get an MLB team back in the MLB and we all know that's not happening at least any time soon

It would suck for Tampa but that's the nature of professional sports in North America. Teams pack up and leave all the time. I'm not a fan of sharing teams either but it could very well pan out the way you say. Montreal and Toronto both in the AL East? That's how it should have been in the first place. Hopefully we'll see this in the not too distant future:

American League East

Toronto Blue Jays
Montreal Expos
Boston Red Sox
New York Yankees
Baltimore Orioles

Tampa Bay Rays moving away from Tampa to Montreal...I can't see it. If a team is going to leave their city for possible relocation it will probably be the Oakland Athletics as well

Oakland A's are moving to Vegas they are deciding between 3 sites for a new ballpark in Vegas right now as Oakland saving their ballpark deal looks unlikely. If there's MLB expansion i would think it would be Nashville and Charlotte as MLB presence in the growing US south is very small.

Well at this point it's not only a partial move. First half of the season would be in Tampa and the second half in Montreal.

Teams definitely don't pack up and leave all the time. There's 440 years between the 4 teams posted above and only one relocation. It is strongly discouraged by voting members because it reflects poorly on the business end. It's the last resort when all other options have failed.

But besides all of that, the Blue Jays have the Yankees starting tomorrow and basically it is a must win series especially given the Wild Card race. For the Blue Jays to have any chance of being a Wild Card team, they would have to sweep the Yankees here and the Red Sox would have to win their games.

It's 2021 and Thunder Bay STILL doesn't have an MBL team. It's almost as bad as the NHL at this point.

So true, but if we can keep most of our players we will be one of the teams to beat next season. None of the tes in the American league wanted Toronto to get a wildcard spot. We were on fire at the end there with momentum in our favour.
