Fans in the stands

"Football fans quick to claim their seats as Roughriders' single-game tickets go on sale"

"As soon as the news broke that we were able to sell single-game tickets, the ticket office was inundated with calls. They were eager and excited to have this experience again.”

Johnson said the Riders could exceed the number of single-game tickets sold in 2019 but the team did not release the number of 2021 tickets sold Monday. The Riders have already sold 22,000 season tickets, which surpassed the 2019 total.

“We are tracking to have incredible crowds as we come back together after being apart for so long,” Johnson said.

Ten thousand tickets for each game were available Monday. Restrictions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic are to be lifted July 11. That includes the ban on large gatherings, meaning the Riders can open the 2021 CFL season on Aug. 6 against the B.C. Lions with Mosaic Stadium filled with fans.

Curious to see what that looks like in the 'softer' markets.

Terry Jones reporting that the CFL's talks with the XFL have broken off. Thank God.

Good. I'm convinced that it would have been the end of Canadian football.

Here's the formal statement.

TORONTO — The Canadian Football League (CFL) released the following statement on Wednesday:

“Our talks with the XFL, exploring the potential for collaboration and innovation, have been positive and constructive.

While we remain open to finding new ways to work together in the future, we and our XFL counterparts have jointly decided to not pursue any formal arrangements at this time.

We at the CFL are now squarely focused on preparing for August 5th and the start of our 2021 regular season, which will culminate December 12 with the playing of the 108th Grey Cup in Hamilton, Ontario.

We are looking forward to this year and a bright future for our league.”

Yup, talks are dead according to numerous people connected to the CFL.

Whew... I don't know exactly was proposed, I was so against the idea that I couldn't bring myself to read anything about it. We don't need any distractions, just hard work and smart people making the CFL the best CFL it can be.

Let's work on getting OUR game back up and running, fans back in seats and see where things are at in 24months.

I doubt anything has changed since the pandemic began. Still waiting on Halifax to build a venue if it wants a team.

It has to happen.

That 1st Grey Cup party would be epic.

Halifax doesn't want to.

Yeah, the idea is pretty much dead right now. Halifax city council didn't seem to keen on a stadium right now with the whole COVID-19 issue.

Looks like status quo for the CFL for the foreseeable future. I don't know how this helps them get more fans in Toronto Montreal and Vancouver.

They actually voted in favour of $20M of funding for a stadium. It is shelved because of the pandemic. Maybe $20M is too little but the Wanderers have been operating there and I think they received far less funding; it's probably good that HRM council and voters are not too enthusiastic about throwing money at pro sports. They're talking about expanding their bare bones stadium right now. It'll be funny if they end up hitting a CFL type scale with their incremental approach.

I think it will mostly come down to whether the CFL remains popular in the future. My impression is they are less popular with younger demographics.

Well, I did say right now

But I hope to see a true coast-to-coast league at some point in my life.

At the rate things are going, there's probably a more realistic prospect of that happening than having the HRM/Nova Scotia government agreeing to back the construction of a 25,000 seat stadium.

The funny thing is that it doesn't seem like such an ambitious undertaking by modern Halifax standards. When you see the booming skyline and huge infrastructure projects going on in the area, a modest smallish stadium isn't the hyper-ambitious, pie-in-the-sky dream that it might have been back in the stagnant 90s.

On a more interesting note, training camps opened last week... some teams reported quite a rash of injuries though which I guess is no surprise given the extended amount of time off, possibly combined with the intense heat... it hit 35 here in Winnipeg yesterday, it was crazy hot for training camp.

Apparently the Riders had four torn achilles in six minutes on Thursday?!?
