In North Scottsdale they have a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired spire/obelisk thing that lights up at night:

Its based on the spires in FLWs unbuilt idea for a new AZ state capitol:

The Boer War Memorial on University Avenue:

Also I suppose the Holocaust Memorial at Earl Bales Park could be considered an obelisk?

Vancouver has a number of these small ones in a park at False Creek near downtown. These are Frank Lloyd Wright inspired:

Here is another photo

And this one in downtown Vancouver, in Canada they tend to be more modest.

Portland, Maine doesn't have any outside of the cemetaries. After seeing all these examples of cities that have one downtown, I think one should be built immediately.

And I don't think that the Bunker Hill Monument in Boston (Charlestown) has been mentioned in this thread: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunker_Hill_Monument

guess it really isnt the idea to refer to mausoleums, but Bellefontaine is chock full of large ones (for graves).

I love the FLW Spire. It's one of my favorite pieces of public art. it's just sooo... different, as if it should be in epcot or something.

She was buried in the graveyard at Reynolda Presbyterian Church in 1924. She didn't live long enough to see the completion of the entire six building complex and the obelisk reminds people of her generosity and vision for the site, as they walk the grounds. This is located on a tall ridge in an historic neighborhood and the other side has an observation area with a large city park, where you can look down on the city and out at two of Winston-Salem's skylines (Downtown & Hawthorne Hill skylines). A beautiful location. I wish I had a better photo of the obelisk.
Here are a couple I found on flickr...you are SO right, it is a beautiful location - on the campus of R.J. Reynolds High School:

I don't think many people realize it...for all of the criticism the BOA crown/spire get for being an "afterthought", it's actually a nicely planned part of the building's architecture.

"There is a 90 ft (27 m) obelisk-like spire at the top of the building echoing the shape of the building as a whole. The spire is covered in 23 karat gold leaf."
