/\ Gorgeous Edmonton shot! Looks like we're getting our first real snowfall right now as I look out the window - if I didn't hate the cold I'd try to get a similar photo in Victoria, but alas, I do - and I'll have to rely on others who are braver than I

Thanks for the comments everyone, greatly appreciated. Lio thanks for agreeing about that one building looking Japanese - glad it's not just me that saw that! I watch a lot of those 4K walking tours in Tokyo, and it just looked like one of those buildings you see when they get off the beaten path.

It's interesting to see the path that Victoria has taken, both pros and cons for sure! I'm a bit surprised it hasn't trended to looking more like Vancouver, but I think Vancouver is cutting edge and far faster moving that Victoria ends up doing its own thing and it's own pace. Actually nice to see Victoria, Vancouver and Kelowna in BC creating their own distinct identity in terms of urban development. I imagine in about 30 years time if you were to be dropped in any one of them they'll feel even more different. And I could be totally wrong on that

Maldive - yes, lots of red brick, painted brick, you name it, lol. Unfortunately once the big one hits... it'll all be nice piles of brick, great for backyard pizza ovens. That synagogue is rather plain and ordinary in a lot of ways, yet is historically significant. A few more pics showing the old brick:

Zoomer... amazing and awesome photos. I hadn't realized that you had posted them here. Thanks so much for sharing. You have such a gift in capturing Victoria. I always love your photos. Yes it's snowing here now. I'll be doing snow removal around the city tomorrow. I'll see if I can take a few photos while working. Not really looking forward to it as I'm really exhausted and it's such long hard work. Starting just after 6 tomorrow morning and ending after midnight anyways. At least it doesn't happen often.

I don't have many photos of the old Jewish synagogue. I really like that old building too.

Thanks SHH - although perhaps posting more often as you do in the weather thread is the way to go versus a few times per year!

GreatScaper- thanks as well - and I didn’t realize the synagogue was restored in 1981. I guess that’s when they added the daycare to the side that’s attached at the front? I can see that helping to help stabilize the structure in the event of an earthquake. Take it easy out there with the clearing the parking lots this week! I love how your business allows you to keep busy when you can’t maintain the lawns - but unlike everything else that is shut down your work ramps up!

Also interesting Halifax pic 87 - now there is a literal example of a view cone!

What a great scene with the ferris wheel, old town and rink. Montreal really embraces and makes the most out of winter.

View of Prince Street in Halifax:

Source

And here are some screen captures from an interesting drone video (original video here):

View looking south over Gottingen and Brunswick area and you can see some of the Cogswell interchange work on the left side

North Common and skating oval. This is going to change a lot. You can see Parkland on the Common under construction with a yellow crane (26 floors or so), then there will be a 20 or so storey tower to the right of that, then the site in the top left is going to be a new hospital (grass area in far left, looks like there's some work happening?). In front of that is I think a new outdoor pool replacing the old 60's era one. Behind the yellow crane is another grassy area that will eventually be another development site.

You can really see the grayscale aesthetic trend in these buildings. I like the pixelated effect they added to that 70's concrete tower, but some colour would have been good.

Gottingen Street. The 2 parking lots here are development sites. 2215 is on the right and there is a rumour that work here will begin shortly on a 21 storey tower.

View looking North by Uniacke Square. You can see some little rowhouses hiding in the middle of the block in the lower left. The neighbourhood in the lower right was a high end residential area in about 1860 but by the postwar era it had declined considerably. Now it's a mix of fairly expensive houses and public housing projects. It could be a nice historic streetscape with a few improvements.

What used to be on the little parking lot in the lower right? Oops. Lots of this around the North End.

I have some photos that I need to share of Victoria's snow storm in December. I'll try and post them tomorrow.

This is a photo I took in the summer of The Hudson Place 1 condo tower. It's currently Victoria's tallest building though 2 more are being proposed taller...

Lovely shot of Bannerman Park by Ray Mackey:

Our former Parliament, the Colonial Building, and its restored lantern; the ice skating loop in the park; and the Fort William area of downtown, with the Battery in the background. Love it!

And a Happy New Year to you all.

Here are a few pictures of Montcalm, in Québec. It was a GREY day.

Lunenburg, NS, about an hour west of Halifax. The town itself has UNESCO Heritage designation and is the home of the original Bluenose schooner as well as the Highliner seafood corp, and was originally settled by early Protestants from the Alps (as was, ironically, Dutch Village in Halifax); Peggy's Cove, Chester, Mahone Bay, and Kejimkujik National Park are in this same section of the Province, which boasts excellent sailing conditions as well as a decent surfing beach, and is the main part of the province with resort communities that cater towards those activities/lifestyles. The Pictou-New Glasgow area (which faces PEI) is similar in a lot of ways but is historically much more Scottish, its beaches more sheltered and its summer accommodations more rustic.

Source

While not really thought of as a farming region, cranberries and blueberries are major local crops and are also found abundantly in the wild, as is wintergreen. Compared to the rest of NS there is a notable absence of Acadian, Scottish, and (pre-Confederation) African-NS influences/demographics in this part of the province, and the landscape is very "typically Nova Scotian", lacking the mountains of Cape Breton and the North-central parts of the province, the dykelands of the Valley, the Fundy tides or the red sands of the NB- and PEI-facing areas. This is the main part of the province with sailing and surf resort communities, and the surrounding area includes Peggy's Cove, Chester, Mahone Bay, and Kejim'kujik Nat'l Park, which has strict regulations protecting it from light pollution.

The town of Lunenburg itself is far removed from the freeway network - the main highway-oriented town in Lunenburg County is (inland, river-oriented) Bridgewater, which doesn't have a reputation for being touristy or charming (tbh I've never heard anything positive about it) but is pretty decent all things considered, with a look and overall vibe similar to the main towns/cities in the Kootenays (except without the mountains) - many of which were first settled by people from the same parts of Europe.

Sorry to be off subject, but I was wondering when I saw that grey sky in your pic of Victoria if BC's capital is a bit less rainy than Vancouver on average? Thanks.
