It'll sure be nice when the Cunard parking lot gets redeveloped. And, eventually, something on the Salter lot (does anyone know if anything is even being considered for the Salter lot)?

Has anyone looked into what apartments in the Alexander cost? I've really been meaning to stick my head in the leasing office one fo these days.

You should also consider the hills downtown - going down just one block can bring you down a few stories. That said, it's also a residential tower and the floor to ceiling height would be less than commercial/office.

I still don't understand the little glass tower being built on the corner....

I'm really hoping the final details work in this ones favour. That white panel/steel border looks terrible.

Maybe it's me, but I'm finding myself having less enthusiasm for this building as time goes on.

Maybe it's winter...

I think a lot of it is winter. The colors and the night lighting isn't finished yet so that adds to the current disappointing look.

You're probably right. Looking at the weather outside today it's easy to lose enthusiasm for many things...

There's a few recent examples of the type of cladding being used on the Alexander here in Vancouver, one in particular is a 20+ storey rental tower in New Westminster just completed. The end result is not great, it's looks thin, cheap and not substantial, sort of resembles drywall but on the exterior, hence don't expect great things from the Alexander once complete, the choice to use this type of cladding surely came down to cost.

Hmmm... that's where my thought process was going, but still hoping it'll be better than I'm imagining...

What a disappointment. This project has turned out to look cheap. Sad we have to even look at it.

Really though. No personality whatsoever in this one. I had such high hopes when I saw the stonework being done on the podium. What a shame.

It looks like a foggy Halifax day - drab shades of gray and dirty white with no color or vibrancy.

It is like this stretch of Lower Water Street is under an architectural curse. Every newer building in this area ranges from mildly to severely ugly. The Alexander looks like a big blocky mess covered in visible seams. From a functional perspective it's probably fine, and the massing is nicer than most highrises in the city, but it seems like such a wasted opportunity for something that could have been much nicer looking with some modifications to the design (mainly, use something other than that white cladding...). This seems possible to me because the budget for finishes on this one was probably comparable to or greater than Southport or the Vic Suites.

I hope Governor's Plaza on Hollis turns out better. And hopefully the Cunard block will break the losing streak on Lower Water Street.

Personally, I think its better than the Maple.

I'm happy it's not fake-sandstone precast.

I think these photos make it look a lot worse than it is. I walk past the Alexander every day, and while I don't love the tower cladding, I don't hate it either. Honestly, it just kind of blends in. The massing on the tower is great, and the podium is very high quality, which I think is the most important thing because it's the podium you actually see.
