Historic Ellicott City, MD

Ellicott City, the seat of Howard County, was founded in 1772. It is located on the Patapsco River, just to the west of Baltimore. Its business district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

These photos are from 2 trips I took to Ellicott City, the first one in 2011 and the second one in 2013. The 2011 trip took place on a rainy day, and the 2013 trip had much better weather.

The historic district is situated in a narrow valley formed by the confluence of the Patapsco and Tiber Rivers. That being said, many of the historic buildings on Main St. are built into the cliffsides.

This looks like a cool town. I wish more of 19th century America still existed, we were so much better at building cities and towns back then.

Nice town and nice pictures. Thanks for sharing.

Above all, I like the natural scenery around Ellicott City and the historic houses.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

I love that town was there for just a couple hours a few months ago but it's incredibly well preserved. It reminds me of eureka springs, Arkansas.

Those are fantastic pics!

Maryland seems like my kind of state. Lots of really cool, well-preserved, small mill cities. Reminds me of Mass.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. It's pretty amazing that such a nice well-preserved area lies just outside the suburban sprawl of the Baltimore National Pike corridor.

Reminds me of a town from an old-school rpg. Anybody else having flashbacks to Final Fantasy 6, looking at some of these pictures?

Part of me wishes I had driven through here more times. I only did so once.

Fun fact: Ellicott City used to have its own town charter, but for some reason it disincorporated and is now a CDP.
