Amherstburg, Ontario

Amherstburg is located along the Detroit River just south of Windsor. It
is an old town, established in 1796 as a military base by the British. Fort
Malden--now a national historic site--can be seen in the first few photos.

Nice pictures. I've never been to that end of Ontario, and the peninsula on that end always feels two-dimensional. I always feel that Windsor is the only town on the border with Michigan. Amherstburg shows what else is along that border, south of Lake St. Clair.

Ok, flar, so this is bizarre.

Earlier I was looking at the Canadian Institute of Planners job list, the first time I've done that in a long time. One of the jobs is in: Amherstburg, ON. Now, to be honest, I wasn't even 100% sure where precisely it was, so I google mapped it and then thought: I wonder what it looks like.

One hour later, I come here and see that you've decided to oblige and answer my question

I've also always got the feeling that outside of Windsor, much of this area is pretty empty. And, it's really not that far from the truth. The communities of Essex County have really done a good job of keeping sprawl under control, it seems:

With the sole exception of the community of Essex the development of towns historically follows the water in a large horseshoe shape from Lake St Clair to Lake Erie just west of Point Pelee.
The section from the south shore of Lake St Clair at Pointe aux Roches to Riviere Canard about opposite Wyandotte was originally developed by the French from 1700 on, whose communities all fronted on water.

I've always thought Windsor was sprawly for a Canadian city. It's nothing compared to American cities in that department, but development is fairly patchy around Windsor. When you get out of Windsor, there isn't much, like most of Canada, but again, Essex County is much more densely populated than its neighbouring counties (like Kent, Lambton, or Elgin). Like Jodelli says, the larger towns are all along the water and the middle is farmland.

Funny, I was in Leamington on Saturday, no time for pics but it would be a good place to photograph. I was in Windsor for a couple days visiting an old friend (he actually snapped a few of these pics with my camera). I'm dying to do some Windsor tours: Sandwich, Walkerville, maybe a long walk down Wyandotte, a huge tour of downtown, etc. I only get down there about once a year and I'm too busy visiting to do a lot of tours.

The city of Windsor is lightly populated (just over 200,000) for the area of land it occupies. Cities like Boston (land area only), San Francisco (likewise) and Vancouver are of similar geographic area believe it or not. Noted that Windsor has part of the Detroit River included.
Even all of Essex County is just shy of 400,000 people, as has been said before with most living near the water.

Towns like Amherstburg took in township lands nearby a few years ago, so now development is under control of only a handful of municipalities.

But Essex County remains the largest populated region in Ontario without some form of regional government (London simply expanded to over 160 sq miles), although school boards have been consolidated.

Oh yeah, I was in Kingsville twice, and Essex once as well and didn't take pictures.
