McCartney to perform Piedmont Park benefit

Atlanta’s summer concert season just got a whole lot hotter.

Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney is scheduled to play The Green Concert, an Aug. 15 show in Piedmont Park.

The booking, a benefit for the Piedmont Conservancy, was announced Wednesday morning at a Live Nation press conference held at the Midtown public park’s Magnolia Hall.

“This is, without a doubt, the biggest thing that’s ever happened to us,” Piedmont Conservancy’s Monica Thornton told the AJC. “We’re celebrating our 20th anniversary this year and this will help us to complete the park’s 53-acre expansion.”

General admission $79.50 tickets will go on sale Monday through Ticketmaster and Live Nation. But American Express card holders and park members will get first crack at the tickets when they go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m..

the pool renovation at piedmont park looks like a really top notch job.

it's cool that swim lanes, a shallow wading section, sprayers and kid friendly elements are all packed into such a relatively small space.

That is attractive!

You know, I haven't been squimming at the King Natatorium in a long time. Wonder how things are over there these days?

funny you mention it.

i was visiting atlanta three weeks ago and a friend who lives in the 4th ward casually mentioned her swimming routine. she goes to the king natatorium frequently. i was a bit suprised, but apparently it's extremely well managed, clean and quite popular.

Just wanted to mention that we came into town the other day and used the new deck at Piedmont Park. In my opinion it's a major enhancement to the park. It's especially handy for people with mobility issues.

The deck has really opened up the Park for a lot of us oldsters Yesterday was a great day for a cruise -- fire up a little Stanky Leg on your ipod and laissez les bon temps rouler.

Atlanta's Project Greenspace

They recently released the first greenspace plans since 1993.

The final technical report is especially interesting.

I was by the construction on Historic Fourth Ward Park last week and it's coming along nicely. Great way to kick start the funding in my opinion. Phase II is supposed to start in 2010.

Well I hear the improvements at the History Center are really nice. We'd especially like to get down and see that new sky bridge thing.

Although the park looks nice (with the possible exception of the house facade), this looks like it might kill any opportunity for a traffic circle at this intersection.

Yeah the movie facade thing is a little too literal for me.

Historic Old Fourth Ward Park update

I took these a week or two ago, but you can how much progress they're making on the cement ponds

First one is looking east from the northern edge of Phase 1

Second one looking south towards Georgia Power

Nice pics -- thanks for sharing. I'm really looking forward to this park and to what it adds to the neighboring communities of multifamily housing that have sprung up nearby in the last few years.

Speaking of O4W park, it looks like they are about to start building the new skate park at the SE corner near the WSB tower.

I think this is the final rendering

Skate Park Celebration
The local skateboarding community is joining the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta BeltLine in commemorating Atlanta's first skate park, Foundation Skate Park, and celebrating the groundbreaking of its newest skate park being developed as part of the Atlanta BeltLine project. Activities will include skateboarding, contests, food, music and more. The event will raise funds to cover additional park features, and will be the last official event at the location before construction begins on converting Foundation Skate Park into a safe, free-of-charge space for youth from across the City of Atlanta to explore and develop their passion for skateboarding.
When: Saturday, April 3, 12pm - 5pm
Where: Foundation Skate Park, located just past the WSB-TV tower at 766 Willoughby Way NE, Atlanta

4th Ward Park

The put out a new batch of progress shots

Photo Gallery

I'm having a really hard time visualizing what the finished product is going to look like. Anybody know of a similar retention pond that exists anywhere? It almost looks like it's being designed so high water times would actually put a good bit of the hardscaping under water (including that curving walkway) but I'm probably confused

That looks so fun. I wish I were still into that stuff. It would have been great. I've always thought of Atlanta as rather anti-skateboard what with all the stops they put around town to discourage it.
