Movie theater planned for revamped Gallery mall, city records show

Quote:
It may soon be showtime again in Center City.

A permit application filed with Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspections for work at the Gallery at Market East shopping mall refer to a “cinema tenant” as being part of the property’s redevelopment plans.

If a new theater came to the Gallery, which is being revamped into an outlet-shopping center called Fashion Outlets of Philadelphia, it would be much different from the venues that used to be in Center City, Haas said.

“It would have more food options, reserved recliner seats, and a liquor license,” he said. “That’s how mainstream movie theaters are opening these days.”

The movie theater proposed at the Gallery would be located on the third floor of the mall’s western-most section at 1025 Market Street, L&I spokeswoman Karen Guss said in an email this week.

An additional “entertainment/restaurant tenant” also is proposed for the third-floor space, currently part of clothing discounter Burlington Coat Factory’s three-level store at the Gallery, Guss said.

Great photo updates! Thank you, Summers. I'm very happy that the Broad and Calowhill projects are happening, but it bugs me that they aren't taller, given the proximity to Center City. At least any unmet demand will force development "sideways" in that area.

Thanks!

I'm okay with the height here. They're still pretty big and bulky. With how much open land/surface lots/empty lots are still in this area and available for development, I'm okay with these developments to fill up some land.

Me too. It's just that it's on Broad near Vine. Feeling nit picky this morning, that's all.

I don't know if this has been posted here or not, but this is a rendering of 142 North Broad, the garage that will be converted into a 10-story building housing 101 apartments:

I am happy they are happening, as well. They make an attractive presentation. My only regret is that all upper floors are constructed entirely of wood frame. As if bundle of match sticks.

That is actually the back of the building.

Does anyone have any information or can point me to a link about the building being constructed at the corner of Spring Garden and N. Hope Street? It's right next to 95, on the east side.

Does anyone know whether they might be intending to retain the decorative terra cotta. I've noticed, and the pictures illustrate, that they've so far only cleanly cut away upper flat portion of the horizontal parts, but left the lower portion and the column pieces in place.
