I actually hope the current design is rejected. Looks too suburban in quality for a major downtown gateway.

How so? the renderings show that it could be high quality. (Who knows what actually gets built though)

You don't get a Mississuaga vibe from looking at it?

I get the concern for matierials, but I don’t see Mississauga at all in this proposal. Maybe a little Edmonton...

It looks like it would fit right in with the M City condos in Mississuaga.

I still don't see it, especially the base.

The M City condos look like they just threw everything against the wall and waited to see what stuck.

If you do think they are similar than you can pretty much compare them to any project in Canada.

I advise everyone to go look at pinnacle buildings...they typically cheap out on materials and their stuff looks crappy after a few years

while I think that the silhouette form of the tower looks reasonable, if they don't produce a quality skin, it'll be an embarrassment

Vancouver’s New Gateway Tower Dances Around Clumsy Opposition
601 Beach
We recently shared the pre-application notice, along with some early info, about Vancouver’s newest iconic tower proposal. Since then, there has been plenty of coverage about the renderings, and some other basic information, but nothing about the mood of the open house, or the finer details of the proposal. I guess it’s a good thing we attended the event...

...Like us, most that trickled into the open house were supportive of the proposal, and eager to learn more. However, there were two waves of 10 to 20 people that came to the event with a preset goal in mind. These groups took similar actions, cornering members of the applicant team and city staff at the boards that illustrated the impact on existing views, and spending about 30 minutes shouting at and ignoring their victims. The main concern of these groups was that this building would affect their investment...

...If you believe our skyline would look better with variation instead of a flat table top, we urge you to write in to 601Beach@pinnacleinternational.ca and prove there is support for this elegant dancer.
Read more about the backlash that took place at the open house here:

I agree.......I also sent a message and/or email voicing my opinion as to why a "Modern vibrant city" should build, and build big and bright. Someone living downtown needs to know that their home area is SUPPOSED to grow. Live and embrace it!!!!!!!

Totally aggree. And they should have factored this into their investment since it's always Been known that this area was getting developed at some point

Seconded.

Of course a prime vacant lot in a dense Downtown core is going to get a tower on it.

I swear, some of this shit just makes my head spin.

People are basically saying "build the tower I bought in, but don't build others around it"

Its ridiculous.

Thumbs down

This tall tower design is just for the sake of a tall tower. The design is ugly and will no way match Vancouver House. I thought the point was to have a gateway of architectural excellence! This design will just be an eyesore.

I want to see a building design that will enhance the view from Granville Bridge and enhance the neighborhood around it. This is not that.

The market for this kind of thing will have totally collapsed long before it ever gets to the construction stage.

As you know, Big Daddy Xi has made it much harder to get money out to buy stuff like this.

Credit is harder to come by locally and we have 35,000 units under construction.

If this doesn't dampen the pre-sale market, I'm not sure anything will.

But pre-sales are still conveniently exempt from the Foreign Buyers Tax...
