I would prefer them tear down the building and put out a call for proposals for the private sector to develop the location. A decent developer and any architect worth their weight could do amazing things with a site like that.

I'm glad the current structure is going away, it had gone so far downhill in the last decade that it was embarrassing.

Seems ideal to turn the location into a lookout similar to what there already is on the opposite side of the bridge.
I agree. It leaked and is falling down.
It is sitting on the old bridge embutment. Time for new people!!

But I'm sure it would make a perfect surface parking lot for an Irving office building.

the Falls Restaurant building was a 1950s trash heap and holds zero historical significance. The fact that some people are making a fuss over it being levelled is mind blowing.

I think it has less to do with the building and more to do with the site. As long as it doesn't sit empty for long, I'm cool with this.

I shot them the other day. I was hoping they could make a go of it, and can now only wonder who, if anyone, can take over such a large store.

With the Sobey's vs Superstore new location vs new location battle that has been going on the past several years I wonder if Sobeys would consider moving into the Target space? The parking would be much better and the current Sobey's location might be easier to subdivide into smaller stores than the Target site.

Just a thought.

It's a good thought, but I rather was hoping against hope tha tsomeone like Macy's, or the like, would come to Canada and actually have something to sell and at a price that would give Walmart a little competition.

What's a little disappointing is that I found that Target's stock and traffic was both up significantly only a few weeks before they decided to exit the country.

I hope that saner heads prevail and vote NO on this proposal to block off the street and make another Irving parking lot.

Seems like the new and expensive city parking garage just a few hundred yards down the street is still mostly empty. Why not give Irving a discount on using those spaces and deny this application?

I've noticed a few articles on the upgrades planned for the Waterloo Village area.

From the TJ:
Quote:
Saint John to reconstruct Waterloo, Paddock streets

The Waterloo Street area will soon get a major facelift, complete with brand new sidewalks, curbs, trees and grass medians.

The city has earmarked more than $1.1 million from its capital budget to breathe new life into Waterloo and Paddock Streets. The investment echoes the confidence of private developers like John Rocca, who believes the area is up-and-coming.

Rocca recently completed a 25-unit housing development at the corner of Waterloo and Golding Streets. That’s down the street from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, which is undergoing its own $10-million restoration.

Around the corner, on Cliff Street, the old St. Vincent’s High School will soon be turned into an apartment complex, with tenants moving in as early as next year......
and on CBC
Quote:
Waterloo Street upgrades to begin in May
The $2.7 million budgeted project will begin at the end of May and wrap up in October.

Since Waterloo Street is such a busy route into the city's uptown, a single lane will remain open while construction is on-going.

As I am posting this, I'm noticing the price tag seems to differ between the TJ & CBC articles.

Wow, really? It seems like just yesterday it was in the current Toys R Us location of the mall.
