Renaming London?

Ok so whenever I mention London to someone who doesn't live here they usually assume the UK. Only people from southern (mostly SW) Ontario will ask for clarification.

Honestly our city needs a new name to get rid of this stupid confusion. Do you support this? I'm not sure if I do.

Take an hour drive down the road and you'll reach Kitchener. They changed their name from Berlin, but this wasn't primarily to avoid confusion with the name, it was to distance themselves from Germany post WWI.

If London was to change it's name, do you have any ideas what it could be called? I'm drawing a blank myself.

Anyways, worth thinking about?

Absolutely not. You just need to say London, Ontario or London, Canada - and they figure it out pretty quickly. There's no confusion from a Canadian standpoint. Americans wouldn't even know London exists, and just add the province or country to anyone else.

New London.

Or, like a town in New Mexico, rename it after a television game show. I nominate Jeopardy.

Honestly, I like our name, and I enjoy how we have embraced the whole novelty of it (Thames river, Covent Garden Market, Hyde Park rd...etc). Do you really think anyone would notice us more with a new name?

The only concrete benefit I could see is lowering confusion when dealing with people from outside Southwestern Ontario, as evidenced in an episode of Archie Bunker. Since I moved to Toronto, almost every single person I've met has asked me if I meant England or Ontario when I tell them where I'm from. I caught myself rolling my eyes the other night when I got asked yet again!

While I usually say "London, Ontario" when referring to the place, some possible name changes could be the following:

New London

Huron

Simcoe City (after John Simcoe, but it also sounds like Sim City. )

Someone mentioned to me the other day they were going to London and Paris for Christmas and I fell predictably into the trap. But I guess London and Paris, Ontario are also quite nice holiday options.

Personally, I'd keep it as it is. I actually wish Kitchener were still Berlin.

Not to be confused with a town in Norfolk County, home to the Blue Elephant.

Great, we'd have another city to add to our collection of European capital namesakes: Warsaw, Vienna, Dublin, Athens, Brussels, Paris, London and Berlin too! On top of that we'd have another case of City Confusion Syndrome, complete with dozens of "The Russians took Berlin" jokes.

Totally agree on that one. It would have been cool, because I grew up in Woodstock. Living directly between London and Berlin... who would get nuked first?

Keep the name London it is a fine dignified name. What the Heck there is a Halifax in England and more than one Prince Edward Island. In Canada we have a London and nobody better take it away!
