Dude the details of that design are pretty killer, the round brick core thing partially exposed behind the steel frame where the balconies are, that's tasty... Kinda brutalist in a way.

I actually kind of like it - except for it's too busy with the kinetic wall (or whatever they are going for) at the bottom.

To my eye it looks more like a wood paneling than brick

Actually I like the application of a kinetic wall here a bit better than at Gr333n assuming it reacts to the wind caused by the L going by.

Does the el even generate wind above ground? I've never felt any wind as it approaches when standing on a platform, certainly not enough to appreciably activate this BS kinetic wall, which seems like a total copout. Why can't more architects follow Helmut Jahn's approach to 600 N Fairbanks and make the parking section look like the rest of the building? Adrian Smith did the same with Trump Tower. It drives me nuts. Multi-story blank walls and parking podiums are the devil's handiwork.

Is that brick? I was thinking it was some type of wood(or faux-wood) paneling

I've definitely felt considerable wind on its approach(especially if it just flies past a stop). It's like a bus going by at 40mph, there's definitely going to be wind. Plus there's just regular wind that will go by for the parking garage.

Agreed. The kinetic wall is a bit too much and if removed would better emphasize the unique, rounded "wood" core.

Bonobozill4- Thanks for the photos. That is definitely not a flattering area for Chicago architecture. I can see the Lawson House, the Wrigley Building, and 401 N. Michigan Ave, but other than that...

They'd be idiots to use any kind of real wood, but yeah, it does have a repeating pattern at the top like wood veneer.

Honestly the intersection of forms is the important thing here, the concept would even work if they just did Modac paint on concrete.

Here is some additional information on building materials and design. As well as some additional pictures.

Says the core is clad in metal panels which is cool too, would be the coolest if they made it cor ten.

Also looked at the video of that department store these guys did in London, if this turns out that well this is going to be a slick building.

Were there special circumstances for the Vista Tower being as high as it is? Did they hit the market just right or were just ambitious? (Which is great if they did)

I'm asking because there seems to be a general consensus that minus the hotel component 400LSD will just be two 800+ foot towers (which I agree with) instead of a very tall supertall.

What was special about the Vista site? It actually seems like a less desirable place for a supertall IMO.

The fact that it is/was the first US project of one of the richest men in Asia on the river, near the lake in view of Trump Tower...

True... Mr. Jianlin did us well, although 400LSD has just as cool of a view in my opinion, if not better.

I hope Related will sell the site to someone who can build something better

353 W. Grand

Suprised no one has posted the demolition of Barlow at Orleans and Grand. Looks like CASE has a potential double-header of ground breaking this week

Went from 32, to 38, to 41 floors according to curbed..., bucking the height reduction trend.

Nice update! That one definitely slipped under our radar. We're going to be all out of bananas after this week
