I wonder why the tower crane is off kilter like this - will it be obvious on the upper floors ?

They've been chugging away - looks like about 15 stories up now - nearing halfway of the height/floors.

Viceroy Hotel is starting to look sharp. I really hope that the facade restoration turns out as good as we all hope.

btw, essex tower should also have its own dedicated thread. anyone want to make one with the most current info and renderings?

I believe that 1326 S. Michigan (although it's admittedly a closer call than Essex) also rises to the standard of deserving of its own thread. If 545 McClurg and 465 Park get a thread, so does 1326 Michigan, in my view....

^^^ Once construction begins I would support a thread for 1326 on the merit that it will be the tallest building that far south in the skyline. Am I correct?

I'm interested to see some updated renders for that project as well. (And I will continue to use the word render because I think all the complain is pretty funny)

Every once in a while I like to inject some stats. Similar to NYC, I noticed Emporis updated certain cities. As we can expect, its not everything but for the stats lovers.

Code:
1,292	high-rise building
467	skyscraper
208	church
40	mast (pole)
36	open-air structure
29	mast (framework)
19	building with towers
15	hall
12	fountain
8	stadium
8	house
7	sculpture
5	airport tower
5	bridge
2	monumental hall
2	telecommunications tower
2	outdoor theater
2	water tower
2	ferris wheel
2	multi-story building
1	monument
1	lighthouse
1	subterranean building
1	silo

74	under construction
111	planned
So in summary, a total of 1749 high rises AND skyscrapers. Add the u/c, and Chicago is over 1800.

But only two multi-story buildings and eight houses.

At first I thought that the World's Fair wheel might be in the database, but it turns out that Emporis has entries for both the old and new Navy Pier wheels.

Essentially the emporis data is not meant to be a god sent accurate piece of info, but more for an "idea" of the highrise / skyscraper count and the activity. Again, not 100% accurate of course.

I remember these figures being a little lower 6 or so months ago. Either way, Chicago is up there in the global rankings, so who cares if its off by a little or if it some categories are fubar like the multi story.

Yes some of the older structures are still in there. But for sake of some statistics, the important part is the skyscraper and high rise count. I think with this boom going on now, hopefully it will add another 200 to the count in 5 or 6 years. More will pop up of course when it comes to the pipeline. 6 months from now, we could have even more proposals or hell, even a super tall. Time is the greatest tease in the real estate game.

^no kidding.

if you're on the top floor of the deck you'd better schedule an extra 15 minutes to get where you're going, and also take some Dramamine
