'The Mall at the World Trade Center' as it was known before it was destroyed. The Westfield Group (The Mall's operators), had plans on expanding the mall by adding an additional 200,000 square feet of retail space and renaming it 'Westfield Shoppingtown World Trade Center.' Westfield currently holds the right to develop the mall that will be constructed as part of the new WTC Complex.

This is a portion shortly after 9/11 with the remains of 'Strawberry' in the background:

Some of those elements will be on display at the memorial, with the original dust.

The mall itself was not directly built underneath the Twin Towers, but to the east, mostly beneath the lowrise towers WTC4 and 5.

Somebody needs to wipe their camera lens...

Nevrtheless, one can see this and the view of the new WTC from New Jersey shore of the Hudson will be the instant new classic views of New York.

I'm still not a fan of the horizontal lines on 2 WTC. They break down the building's verticality for no good reason. Imagine it as a single glass crystal that changes from black to white. The horizontal subdivisions take away from that effect.

That's the old version. On the newer version, vertical "fins" line the tower all the way to the tip of the "spire".

This is the best tower that will rise at the site. I'm glad construction will finally start. I can't stand to see this tower under the "Proposed" thread.

I like that there's no horizontal lines in the new version, but making the glass so transparent almost has the same effect to me.

I don't know... don't the horizontal breaks make the whole thing seem more "substantial," somehow?

Depends on your preference. To me it just looks like the design was brought more in line with the Freedom Tower.

The progressive shading is gone now too. It makes the vents for the mechanical levels stick out a lot more, and I'm not sure if I like that.

I also was not aware there was a new and revised version, but then again, I dont follow the NYC threads all that closely also. I liked the old version, but the new one seems even better to me. Personally, I think its just a nice looking tower, and one that will compliment FT very well. I too cant wait to see this one start rising.

The shading was an interesting illustrative gimick, but, did any seriously think that they would build it that way, just think of the expense. In this day of escalating material cost, one color from base to top is the most cost effective option.
