Regina | Historical Discussion

Basically in this thread you just tell us what you remember about Regina that has now changed (i.e I remember when the Petcetera on Albert St north used to be a Future Shop), lets try to keep them short please, thanks.

So i will start

...when Regina's original skyscraper (McCallum Building - 10 stories high) was imploded back in 82 to make way for the 1st of 2 Twin Towers...

...when there was an old movie theatre accross the street from the above location (corner of Scarth St and 12th Ave) where the current Canada Life building now is, last movie i watched there was Wayne's World, 3 times! ...

P.S. Pictures are ENCOURAGED whenever possible, wish I had some oldies

I remember when...

...when the little Organic grocery store on 14th Ave downtown between Lorne St and Rae St, used to be an IGA and I could buy a coke, chocolate bar and chips for about $1!...

...when where the Brewsters and Shoppers on south Albert and 29th Avenue (just north of the 7-11) used to be a hotel and the best bar i have ever gone to in Regina "CHECKERS!"...

...when the Lewvan didn't exist...

"i'm sure theres tons more but it's late"

Did you say Wayne's World?

Photo from that last roll of slide film (shit, slides?) I took of the Capitol Theatre.

I remember Strathcona Elementary School (cause i went there the last year it was opened) which is on Broad St between 14th & 15th Ave. It is now a Shoppers and some Condos.

Oh and the Shoppers used to be across the street to the North, building is still there but I don't know what it currently is

Poor Capitol theater, I hope we get one downtown again soon.

I remember when

...Swiss Chalet was still in town where that sports bar now is on Albert Street north. (i worked there)

...Not only Robert Usher but McGuigan was still open as a high school between 8th Ave N and 9th Ave N beside Lorne St behind the Northgate Mall.

...We used to have a really good pizza place in the 80's just off of Albert Street south near the Southland Mall called Geno's

...the Honda Dealership on Broad St (by all the dealerships) went up in flames and they had to rebuild on a different section of their lot

Arcola Ave. was a 2-way single lane road, with a railroad travelling alongside. Also Ring Rd. and Arcola Ave. intersection was a 2- or 4-way (??!) stop (somebody correct me if they know!) as were other road crossings along the Ring Rd. And also a lot of Ring Rd. was 2-way single lane. Construction of Lewvan Drive was proceeding, as that was when one of my friends would ride his pee wee motorcycle (80cc) short distances alongside (after construction hours of the day).

The McGavin's bakery on 4th and Albert and the brewery accross the street.

Eatons was in the Cornwall centre and The Bay was at 12th and Hamilton.

The Dairy Queen at 5th and Pasqua was still open (back when they still had them without seating)

I've been uploading a few more old film shots of Regina buried around here. Here is the last bit of CIBC (FCC) and McCallum Hill II construction bits I've found. I want to get my slides of the Capital Theatre scanned sometime. They would make a great little photothread on their own. Photos from me.

Here's the link to a flickr set of Regina on film they come from. I'll be uploading a few more as time goes on. Probably things that have changed first.

And thanks for the links A4REgina, my flickr account has seen a much needed increase in traffic the last little while.

I'm not positive, but I think these were the last shows playing at the Capitol Theatre. Photo from me.

If you click for the other sizes, the large version shows Tower II under construction as well as the sign for the old Regina Piano and Organ store on Scarth Street as well as the old Swiss Jewelers Sign.

I remember when Rochdale Blvd. was just a two lane paved road waaay out off Pasqua. A friend lived on Wells St. the north end of his street was a field. He used to ride his snowmobile out of town there. We used to carry a .22 rifle out that way and walk all the way out across Rochdale and shoot golphers. There were three or four steel bins on the corner. We would sit there and shoot straight west. No houses in sight. Approx 1991 - 1992.
I also remember walking through the construction sight of the old Royal Bank Data Center while it was being built around the same time.
