At various times, I've answered to Mike, Michael and Mick. Most people looking for a comfortably familiar way of addressingmme fall back on Mike. My mother intoned Michael to convey a sense of impending doom and my father called me Mick. In the service, I was usually called Sarge or the more formal Sergeant depending on context and, unfortunately, my initials come tantalizingly close to a coarse profanity and my closest friends would employ it as a term of endearment or to put me in my place. I also suspect that it was whispered behind my back by those far down the food chain or those with real or imagined grievances. I've always fallen back on the amusing old saw, 'I don't care what you call me as long as it's not late for dinner.' Matt, Matthew, Mark or Claudius. I would never intentionally insult anyone here. For now Matthew it is.

Good morning T2. I found it on an old cd of mine with other ebay photographs. I'm sorry to say that is the largest version I have.
(I don't own the photograph...I wish I did!)

and today.

10401 was one of the first high-rises along this section of Wilshire Blvd. Today it is surrounded by much larger 'siblings'.

Let's briefly return to the triumvirate Pac-Mutual complex.

http://www.lapl.org/

Here is a rare view of the utilitarian & modern looking back side of Pacific Mutual's first building at 6th and Olive.

circa 1919

ebay

Also notice the Casa Grande Apts. and The Wilhelm 'first class' Apts.
(I also spy the steeple of the church that will be replaced by the Biltmore Hotel in 1923)

It's not clear to me. What is the street between the Maier Brewery and the Bottling Dept : Commercial Street or Aliso Street ?

Back in the early 1950s for several years my family used to spend part of the summer at a hotel called the Westwood Manor which was located on Wilshire west of 10401. I was a very young child from Texas, and LA was the first big city I ever visited. There was a LOT of smog back during that time. One of my most distinct early memories of LA is the sight of 10401 standing proud and alone (it was pink by then I think?) in the smoggy sky. I loved everything about it for some strange reason. I even developed a fondness for the smell of smoggy air. Anyway, 10401 looked so sleek and modern to my young eyes, and I think it may have inspired a love and interest in high rise apartment structures and all things urban. The Westwood Manor is long gone. It was replaced with a rental apartment building (very ugly high rise) with the same name.

I couldn't help but notice the corner of the plaza in the Map from MichaelRyerson

Do you notice the three toilet seat looking things there in the corner? Troughs for animals is still my guess.

Voila! My first try at a panorama!

And here's that 1850 pictorial map again that I posted a few pages back:
http://imgzoom.cdlib.org/Fullscreen....nd=calisphere#

Here's the familiar ca 1858 photo:

http://waterandpower.org/museum/Earl...20(1800s).html

and the new 1860 one:

ebay

The two together give a much fuller idea of what was going on then. Totally thrilling :-)
Except for the new paint and extension on the Carrillo/Pico Adobe, they almost look like they were taken on the same day.
(I wish I had the skills to splice the two into a panorama)

That must be the Signoret Building at lower right. (You remember Judge Hayes, he granted Biddy Mason her freedom after Sheriff Barton served a writ on her scoundrel of an owner.)
Wow, I'm not going to sleep tonight.
Here you go, t2! I took out the sepia tone on the one to try for a better match...rooflines, horizon lines, even some of the trees match up fairly well. I may try incorporating the gas tanks from the other photo to "flesh" it out even further...I'm no expert, but I hope this helps!

I stumbled across an aerial of the civic center centered over Court St. It has a nice view of a couple of tunnels.

Thank you lemster2024. This really looks like a town of 4,385 now, up from 1,610 in 1850. Compared to the famous 1850 balloon shot below one can see the bustling ribbon development running east from the Plaza, through what was recently exclusively agricultural land. The 1858 (left) half of the panorama looked so rural, not much more than a stage stop. The combined view hints at the future. Amazing what's come and gone (and survived) since then (not to mention what's happened here). Thx again.

The mystery at 424 Calle de los Negros.

Now I'm still trying to locate number 424 in photographs of Calle de los Negros.

I have no idea how this saga played out. I wonder if they ever found Ballerino's missing money? I love a good mystery!

If only Los Angeles St had been left to continue on, as it had for so long, to meet Alameda at an angle, instead of turning it east to meet Alameda at a right angle, wiping out Lugo House in the process. All blood under the bridge, I know, but it still gets me.

I thought you were talking about editing the name in this thread in post. I apologize for that. For me, I wanted to be called Matt as a kid (people usually called me Matthew then); I preferred to be called Matthew in college (people would call me Matt), and today I don't care. Either one is good. Some people say Math. At one time I didn't want to be called Matty, but Lauren calls me that frequently, so I don't mind it as much these days. It's misspelled (guessing) about 65-70% of the time and I think it's because my somewhat common name isn't really that common. I rarely meet anyone named Matt. I'm usually the only one everywhere I go. I know no one in this thread would try to insult anyone here.

On the subject of post production, it was hard because it was often frame-by-frame editing and there are so many frames in just one second. I did have the pleasure of making the titles & credits three times. At the end, all you really have is the post staff and a fast approaching deadline. I did have to record extra sound when I worked on the audio. Sound is mostly timelines and the hardest part is recording additional sound. A person I worked with on sound once told me he heard the audio of the movie in his dreams at night, from replaying it over and over. So some may say that is the worst part. We wanted perfection and no matter how bad the problem, we could always find a way to fix it. Since we are in a world of larger and larger screens, HD, etc., it really has to be perfect. Only when someone was rushing things for an early copy and ignoring our warnings was there a problem. It's worth noting, we had to create their vision, often with them only walking in two or three times a day to look over it and say it's not what their vision was. I can remember having to change the lighting in post (something about forgetting a mole in the corner). We were the only option to make it right. When I returned home, I had digital copies of the work I did for a 'reel' and my equipment bag was covered in gaffer tape. Though the pay was low and I was told to work weekends, I do remember having free food (breakfast, lunch and dinner). On my free weekends, I could field study residential architecture with my books. I still think those two or three years were the best. So many great people, beautiful architecture on the weekends, and I was paid to make something entertaining. Hard work, but fun. And once you work in an industry, it really changes how you view everything. If you're reading this at home and have an opportunity to do something like this, don't pass-it-up. It helped me gain my current job.

I never expected to find a post-modern video featuring Calle de los Negros.

(warning: -the segment with the pistol at 4:45 could possibly cause epileptic seizures)

drink a box of wine and enjoy. (for full effect watch LARGE)
