Does anybody know if they're thinking about having a streetcar line run along the river to the new district? Seems like it should be a no-brainer to connect the area with the CBD and FQ.

New Orleans airport plans $85M connector road link to passenger rail; I-10 flyover delayed

Officials at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport want to build a roughly $85 million connector road to whisk passengers from a potential Amtrak train station on the south side of its footprint to the gleaming new terminal on the north side...

I'm not sure where that road would actually run? Why do they need a separate roadway when they already have the access road which is basically a freeway spur?

It sounds like this would just branch off the existing access road near Vets, curve around the north runway end, and go to the north terminal? I thought you could exit to Bainbridge today from the north terminal to get to the access road, but it looks like that's blocked off with a security gate. On the south end, it would branch off the access road with an overpass over Airline.

The plan is to build a roadway with the supports required for a tram system, plus I'm guessing they would like a separate access road back for operational vehicles. I think it's exciting they're looking ahead to future growth and actually planning something that can be adapted for a future, better use. They also mentioned this is going forward regardless of commuter train approvals because they see the need for passengers to easily access both sides, so that's a good sign too.

Yeah I mean it could be a good idea, but the devil is always in the details with these things. Orlando and Miami both have really nice multimodal stations at their airports now. If MSY does it right, it could also be urbanistically linked into Rivertown Kenner and help with economic development there. Imagine taking a tram from the airport terminal to a walkable urban neighborhood with hotels, bars, restaurants, etc. (And a planetarium ) It wouldn't be as bustling as the French Quarter or Warehouse District, but you could probably build it up to something like Algiers Point.

I'm just trying to figure out how this would work practically. I guess I'll have to wait to see drawings. Both of MSY's runways have a large Runway Protection Zone at each end where tall buildings or aerial structures/overpasses are not allowed, or sharply restricted. That creates an issue for this plan at both ends of the runway. Most airports will do underpasses, but obviously that's not ideal for New Orleans. There actually is an underpass shell built further west. I always assumed they would build a tram using that underpass, to an Amtrak station near the FedEx warehouse... that would be half the length, only 1.7 miles to the Amtrak station instead of 3.2 to the Rivertown site.

And then at the terminal, there's not really a great place for a tram to plug in. They took the best spot for a parking garage (IIRC it was supposed to be a hotel tower originally). The tram at Oakland airport is done pretty well, the station is front and center when you walk out of the terminal. Not sure that's possible at MSY, but maybe they can wedge it in somewhere.

24-hour po-boys, daiquiris, rooftop patio headed to Mid-City as Melba‘s expands

For the past decade, Melba’s has held down the busy corner of Elysian Fields and North Claiborne avenues with 24-hour po-boys, hot plates and daiquiris. Now work is underway to open a second Melba’s on Tulane Avenue in Mid-City.

The new restaurant will be modeled closely on the original Melba’s, though it is smaller and for that reason will not have the laundromat, which is a major component of the first one...

Redevelopment of historic Dew Drop Inn breaks ground

https://neworleanscitybusiness.com/b...breaks-ground/

A redevelopment of the Dew Drop Inn, New Orleans’ leading Black music entertainment venue in the Jim Crow era, has broken ground in Central City.

The groundbreaking at the dilapidated structure, located at 2836 LaSalle St. in Central City, took place in early July. According to Iris Development CEO Curtis Doucette, the redevelopment is expected to be completed by the end of next spring or early summer.

Renovations will include a music venue, a 17-room boutique hotel and a pool. The project received City Council approval in April 2021. Ryan Gootee General Contractors is handing construction, and Studio Kiro is leading architectural work.

The Dew Drop Inn showcased musical artists including Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Little Richard and others who performed at the establishment in its heyday from the mid-1940s to the late 1960s. Little Richard wrote a song about the club, “The Dew Drop Inn.”

The property operated as a hotel over the next few decades. Repeated attempts to revive the structure have faltered over the years since Hurricane Katrina’s floodwaters permanently shut down the business.

In May 2022, the building was listed by the National Register of Historic Places as part of “the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation.”

Happy to see that addition to tulane ave.

Tulane ave is still such a frustrating throughfare. So much potential but still such a hodgpodge. One block is great and the next a warzone. Hopefully that can change and those 4-5 blocks that are such eyesores can be addressed and the whole corridor start to thrive.

Is all of this is going to built around the parking garage that's already there? Or will they be tearing it down and building it all brand new?

Its my understanding the parking garage portion described above is inside the building and the underground basement section will be a portion of the parkin garage as well.
