Sorry in advance to the ignorance of this question... but how well (easily) can an english speaking person get around the city? I'd love to go there for a week or so & never go into tourist areas.

You should not have any problem if you begin your first sentence by bonjour.
To be honest on daily basic I heard more Arabic, Chinese or African languages than English.

Or just put the emphasis on a typical anglophone "bonne-jouwr" and people will most likely try to answer you in english. Don't expect people to speak a fluent english though. I've met many persons in France who couldn't speak a single word of english. (by chance, I speak french too)
