About the Redevelopment and Expansion Project:

Highlights:

-76 additional acute care beds

-Expanded Cancer Clinic

-Increased number of private patient rooms from 15% toward the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) new design guidelines of 80%

-Expanded Ambulatory Care programs

-New Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

-10 new Operating Rooms

-Expanded medical, surgical and outpatient services

-Associated support space

-Additional above ground parking spots

Why Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital's Redevelopment and Expansion is Critical:

-Buildings and physical plant are approximately 40 years old - same footprint since 1971

-Building no longer meets requirements for best practices for inpatient and Ambulatory Care

-Beds are currently at full capacity - impacts Emergency Department (ED) wait times and patient flow throughout the hospital

-Current inpatient rooms are approximately 220 square feet as compared to new MOHLTC guidelines of up to 300 square feet

-New inpatient rooms will be barrier free to meet the needs of patients with physical disabilities

-Currently 15% of inpatient rooms are private rooms versus 80% in the new MOHLTC design guideline

-To meet infection prevention and control standards, all patient care areas must incorporate isolation capabilities and avoid overcrowding - about 41% of beds are in ward rooms (3-4 beds per room)

Benefits of New Hospital to Burlington Residents and Community:

-Lower wait times for ED, surgery and Diagnostic Imaging

-Increased capacity for Diagnostic Imaging & Laboratory Areas

-State-of-the-art hospital facility with new capacity and service to meet future growth and aging population

-Ability to retain and attract top medical and other health care professionals

-Multi-million dollar project means economic stimulus for local construction trades (250 new hospital based jobs when the first phase opens and 1,200 man years to construct the new facility)

-Improved quality of life, health and well-being for residents

Province commits to Jo Brant’s $312-M expansion
(Burlington Post, Aug 12, 2011)

Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital is getting its long-awaited redevelopment, but the actual physical improvements won’t be realized until later this decade.

The Ontario Liberal government has finally approved the $300-million-plus renovation project for the city’s only hospital, an idea conceived about 10 years ago....

When the future vision for the hospital is completed it is expected to have made the following improvements: a six-storey tower; 76 new in-patient beds; 10 new operating rooms; a renovated cancer clinic, Intensive Care Unit and surgical suites; new diagnostic imaging and laboratory areas; and enlarged parking facilities via an above-ground tiered structure to be built on adjacent land, which could add up to 500 vehicle spaces.

Read it in full here.

Now that is a nice building. That will be the new east-side view, from Lakeshore Rd. where it bends south along the Beach Strip.
