There's room for improvement but this little stretch appears to no longer have any substantial holes and has a nice pedestrian scale. The number of areas like that is growing a lot, while the big exception is the cluster of empty lots running from around the Skye site down to the waterfront.

Favourite development to go up since joining the forum in '06.

Remember when we though Armoury Square was a big deal?

Great pics! Am I remembering that there had been a plan to incorporate the Benjamin Wier House into one of the new buildings? Has that plan changed? I hope so, actually.

Having been by, it seems the two are separate. The Wier house got some work done, and the Brown Hound II in the lower level/courtyard is nice, especially in a corner of downtown that's normally a little quieter.

That's a win-win for me. This little courtyard looks quite lovely, and I'm looking forward to seeing it in person one of these days.

Amazing transformation of this partial block over the last 12 or so years. I assume that courtyard is private access to the buildings and underground parking? If I lived there I would not want it to be public space. Just more motivation for TPTB to get rid of the container traffic crashing along southbound on Hollis St.

I haven't been there, but apparently there is a cafe in the bottom floor at the rear of the Benjamin Wier house (in the courtyard)?

Coincidently, after posting about this yesterday I was reading the excellent "Noticed In Nova Scotia" blog post that mentions this building and some of its history.

A little off topic, but I chuckled a little at this:

Benjamin Wier (1805-1868) is a good example of why you might not want to name houses after random people from the past. He built this beautiful house but only lived in it for a couple of years before he died in 1867. His biography describes an “unmannered malcontent” businessman and politician who I would be happy not to know. In politics his legacy was ensuring the patronage system was securely in place.
Interesting how the details of historical names tend to be lost over time...

The second location of the Brown Hound is in the basement. Its a really nice spot. I was there during the winter, but I'm willing to bet that the courtyard patio is great.

Brown Hound Pub has seating in that courtyard space... and there's (public) access to the upper level of the Brewery Market through the courtyard.

Thanks for the info, folks. Looks like it will be one of those nice little spots to put on your list of places to go when you're downtown.

Quite the transition for this block over the last 5 - 10 years eh?

This complements Flynn Flats very well! I'm definitely a fan of this one (also those apartments I'd wager are going to be massive!)

The apartments are big compared to the other new developments. There are only 12 total in the building. And the 6th floor is one unit.

Yeah this development was originally approved with something like 40+ units and the developer went back and got approval to reduce the number to 12. So these units are at least three times bigger.
