New York World's Fair 1964

purchased on ebay

Above: In the center is the symbol of the fair, the Unisphere.

To the extreme left you can see the towers of the New York Pavilion designed by Philip Johnson.

Many more to come, once I find time to post them.

My own photos of the NY State Pavilion from fall 2008-it's really an absolute miracle that structure is still standing:

The tower and bridge were intended to be permanent, but a lot of other buildings were temporary. A few of the temporary buildings were later reconstructed to be permanent.

Some additional pics of the NY State Pavilion at the 1964-65 NY World's Fair. This was one of Philip Johnson's more interesting efforts IMHO. The structures are currently in a preservation/demolition battle.

There was a 9,000-sf terrazzo map of New York State under the old canopy that had all but deteriorated but is currently undergoing a restoration. The map is a replica of a Texaco road map.

I was surprised by the bright yellow detailing.

A pamphlet for the 1933/34 Century of Progress in Chicago.

found on eba

I think this brochure helps convey the polychromatic aspect of the fair.

This is one of the best Century of Progress photos I have, and yet it's in B/W.

CPL

Above: So try to imagine this view with an extraordinary array of colors.

During the fair this was called the Avenue of the Flags.
It is a causeway that still exists today between the Field Museum and the Shedd Aquarium out to the Adler Planetarium.

Above: This is a view toward the west tower of the Skyride and Chicago's famous Soldier Field (home of the Bears).

^^^The Louisiana Purchase Exposition was one of the more beautiful fairs.
Thanks for posting those photos SuburbanNation.

Also, it's great to see those color postcards of the Century of Progress scanned so LARGE.

Below is an old glass slide of the Shedd Aquarium during the world's fair.
It's actually for sale now on EBAY (Friday, Feb. 6th....16 hours left).
