Waukegan is one of Chicagoland's most diverse suburbs, and actually has a large number of non-Mexican hispanic immigrants.
Kenosha isn't quite as diverse, but it has a nice waterfront, a decent downtown, the streetcar, some TOD relating to the streetcar, and some good Italian food. Oh, and of course a Metra stop.
Not sure what's so "miserable" about them.
