^Was thinking the same thing. Might be a better fit. The stadium would probably need to be half demolished to reconfigure it though.

Perhaps, but the financing and who will pay are likely not settled. There is no universe I can think of where JR will not be asking for some substantial public handout. I just don't see the same man who strongarmed the city and state by threatening to move to Sarasota, suddenly turning around his modus Operandi.

....In the article, Hinz said Reinsdorf is reportedly eyeing the same financial source from the ISFA for a potential new baseball stadium in the South Loop, and it’s not clear if ISFA funds from an existing 2% tax on Chicago hotel revenues would be sufficient to cover both projects.....

Bill Jackson, executive director of Discovery Partners Institute, told the Sun-Times he’s heard the White Sox have interest in The 78 and that a new ballpark and the institute would work well together sharing the land.

However, a Chicago developer familiar with the property and requesting anonymity told the Sun-Times the institute has been trying to get out of the deal and that there wouldn’t be enough room for both the institute and a new ballpark within The 78, anyway.

But veteran Chicago-based stadium consultant Marc Ganis disagreed with that assessment, telling the Sun-Times that about 12 to 14 acres would be required to build a baseball-only stadium that seats 35,000 or so, plus another three acres for a parking structure that would hold around 7,000 cars.....

Interesting, definitely more cohesive that what's currently around Sox Park. Personally, I would like to see more height/density closest to the 35th Street Redline. But that's just me.

If the Sox move to the 78
If the Bears move near McCormick Place/A.H.
If the Fire move to 35th and Shields

It does leave open up a pretty darn important matter of what will happen to Soldier Field.
Does the city still scale it down and use it as an effective replacement for the Northerly Island music venue (which was always supposed to be temporary?). Does it open up one of the entry corridors to make it effectively an open stadium? The amenities (particularly on the east side of the stadium) seem too great just to tear down SF to the stubs and colonnades, converting it to "parkland" as some have called for.

Jesus,

I am all for seeing renderings of shiny mega developments in the city, but this is getting to be a bit much. What is this a rendering of now? Another potential Sox Stadium pitch?......... What's more irritating is so many of these projects are increasingly struggling to get off the ground. In no order:
1 - Lincoln Yards - Stalled with one bio science building built
2 - 78 - A building (or two?) getting off the ground with the possibility of a Sox (or Bears?) stadium.....
3 - Casino development - Stalled
4 - MR - Who knows
5 - Now this?.... Whatever the above render is?

It's becoming the Boy who Cried Wolf.....

O'hare is a completely different animal....... Not to derail this thread, but that's a project the airlines want, and it will get built - We just don't know exactly what's going to be fleshed out in the coming days/weeks.

Everything in the city I listed are these shiny mega projects that require a ton of capital and a case for building them. At some point, the powers that be should focus on one or two, not this ever growing laundry list of potential projects. It's just starting to feel like people flashing renderings/ideas around to get attention and headlines.

Whether the megaprojects happen or not is kinda besides the point. The city can only really control the supply side, not the demand side. From the mayor's standpoint, the most important thing is making sure that zoning and approvals are in place so that downtown and the neighborhoods can continue to grow as quickly as demand allows, and making sure these new areas are planned correctly so they don't degenerate into suburban, traffic-choked crap. Some policies may boost growth or slow it down, but really you're at the mercy of broader cultural and demographic forces.

For a megaproject like The 78, Related has done a great job master-planning the site with top urban designers. Now the city just needs to hold them to their end of the bargain, even if Related ends up handing it off to someone else and it doesn't get built out for 20+ years.

There's nothing in Chicago history to suggest these sites get built out overnight. The area east of Michigan Avenue (now called Illinois Center and Lakeshore East) has taken 75 years to approach buildout, from the opening of Pru-1 to the completion of Cirrus/Cascade. In that time, the vision has been adjusted - first office districts, then hotels, then highrise apartments. First the Pedway was gonna be the lifeblood of the area, then it got flipped to encourage more life on the street above ground.
