Very interesting thread - I didn't realise Hawaii was quite so urbanised. A lot of very ugly buildings in the city - although collectively the effect is most impressive - and the natural setting is astonishingly beautiful - what amazing beaches and sea!

Honolulu is off the radar here on the mainland more than I realized. I had no idea the city was that urban. The urban/natural setting there is like downtown San Diego on steroids.

The photos are terrific but I honestly don't think my eyes would care for all those vibrant colors. I mean, the turquoise water, the lush greenery - the bright sandy beaches?

I mean, why would I want that when I can savor the overcast skies of Cleveland, the murky waters of Lake Erie, the remnants of this weekend's snowfall... errr.

Holy cow.

(RIP Phil Rizzuto)

Those are just beautiful. I had no idea Honolulu was so big. All of my impressions of it are from old reruns of Magnum P.I. and Hawaii Five-O. It obviously has grown tremendously in the last 25 years.

Those pics are so striking and the place looks so beautiful, it begs the question: what are the downsides to living there? I know it is expensive, but has the growth led to other problems?

Living in Nova scotia where spring never wants to come, I can't begin to tell you how envious I am.

Like any other large city, rapid growth has brought a handful of problems. But I think Honolulu's worst foe is traffic. There is an excellent network of freeways but they can't cope with the volume of cars. The problem is not the quality or quantity of freeways but the number of cars. Rapid growth has resulted in sprawl and mainland-like suburban communities. The people that live in these neighboring suburbs are perhaps the largest contributors to traffic. Not to mention that public transportation, aka "The Bus", covers the entire island....but takes forever!

There are plans on the way for an elevated train.....that will run from the suburbs to downtown so that traffic on the freeways can be alliviated. WIll see what happens....its still in planning stages.

Next on the list I would definetively put lack, or absence of, affordable housing. The average price of a single family home in O'ahu is well above $650,000 so its difficult for first time buyers to get into the game. And lets not talk about rent. Manhattan anyone?

Amazing.
Any word on when the sun is scheduled to appear in the Delaware Valley? PA winter is rainy, cold, barren, and depressing.

Stunning photography. You don't normally think of Hawaii as urban, but there you go.
